A lighthouse as a landmark, a Baltic Sea lagoon to the north and an estate with regional products: Bastorf offers plenty of reasons to explore the municipality. If you are planning a holiday, you can focus on different things, such as observing nature, spending time at the beach, following paths through wooded areas or getting a glimpse of life on the estate. This can also help you decide which location best suits your travel plans.

Lighthouse, Lagoon and Wildlife Watching

BUK Lighthouse is considered a landmark of the municipality of Bastorf and is over 100 years old. It is the highest lighthouse in Germany in terms of its topographical location; the tower itself is about 20.8 metres tall. It is a distinctive feature of the municipality, while Riedensee offers a very different kind of landscape.

The Riedensee nature reserve lies north of the municipality of Bastorf. The Baltic Sea lagoon is surrounded by reeds and has a natural, shifting connection to the sea. Two observation platforms, accessible from the beach, are suitable for birdwatching. From the platforms, you can look across the lake towards the Kühlung hills and Bastorf Lighthouse. The lake, the Kühlung hills and the lighthouse all come into view together. If you plan to visit the platforms, it is worth checking their current condition in advance.

The beach and trails offer different points of interest, too. The village of Kägsdorf gives residents and visitors direct access to the Baltic Sea beach. The Kühlung terminal moraine, with woodland hiking and cycling trails, lies southeast of the municipality of Bastorf. Beach access is specifically associated with Kägsdorf, while the trails in the Kühlung hills offer a separate option for active days. Which of these landscapes you prioritise in your plans may therefore also influence your choice of accommodation location.

The Estate, Regional Products and Garden

The restored Bastorf estate complex now serves as an Ostseeland hotel and holiday farm. The property includes two thatched barns, a main house and four outbuildings. The farm shop is located in a restored, thatched three-aisled hall house dating from 1820. It sells regional products and goods made on site. The building offers a tangible glimpse of historic architecture as well as a reason to visit today.

The farm shop’s fruit kitchen regularly makes jams and fruit spreads using regional fruit. The selection may vary by season. The Mecklenburg Oil Mill at Bastorf estate produces cold-pressed sunflower, linseed and rapeseed oils from organic seeds; the oils are available to take away directly. Product availability may change.

The BonBon shop at Bastorf estate offers more than 40 varieties of fruit candies, including sugar-free varieties, as well as fruit gums and liquorice. The exact selection may vary. Right next to Bastorf Lighthouse, Café Valentins serves homemade cakes and hot sea buckthorn juice; the menu may also change. Nature and architecture are joined by regional products and sweet treats among the things to discover in Bastorf.

For exploring the estate together, there is an orchard and herb garden where children and adults can look around. There is also a children’s ranch. The garden and ranch offer specific activities for a stay with children, without requiring a set programme.
