Am Salzhaff: Water, Wind and Culture
Accommodation in Am Salzhaff
At Am Salzhaff, water activities at the Pepelow surf spot sit alongside cycling and cultural and historical discoveries. In Pepelow and Rakow, listed historic houses add to the scenery, while the “Lierlütt” pottery in Teßmannsdorf offers another craft-related attraction.
Water, Wind and Watersports
The Ostseecamping “Am Salzhaff” camping and motorhome park is located right on the Salzhaff. Toilets, showers and disposal facilities are available at the campsite. At the Pepelow surf spot, the very shallow Salzhaff offers an especially large area where you can stand. The surf spot is at its best when the wind blows from the southwest to the north.
The surf school at the surf spot offers windsurfing, kitesurfing, kayaking, wakeboarding and water skiing. Kiteboarding and windsurfing schools at the campsite offer courses for beginners and advanced participants.
Cycling Route and Cultural Sites
The Baltic Sea Cycle Route runs past the campsite, allowing active visitors to conveniently reach the Hanseatic city of Wismar or the holiday island of Poel by bike. These are two differently described destinations to choose from: a Hanseatic city or a holiday island. The route complements the watersports on offer with another way to enjoy your stay.
The history of buildings and crafts also offers specific points of interest. The list of protected monuments, as of 14 May 2024, includes the hall house at Strandstraße 20 in Pepelow; it was formerly a smallholding. The manor house at Parkstraße 9 in Rakow is also listed as a monument. The “Lierlütt” pottery has been operating since 2018 in Teßmannsdorf, a district of Am Salzhaff. Together, these examples offer a range of cultural themes: former uses, manor-house architecture and pottery.
More Experiences in the Wider Rostock Destination
The wider Rostock destination offers everything from nature experiences to regional history. At Wildpark-MV, visitors can explore the park independently or join guided walks, including wolf, owl and evening walks. The Schwaan Climbing and Adventure Forest has seven courses for children, beginners and advanced climbers. Its 116.5-metre-long flying fox line runs directly over the lake.
At the Wolhynier Umsiedlermuseum in Linstow, guided tours use ethnographic objects, photographs and documents to tell the history of the Volhynian Germans—from the mid-19th century to their resettlement in Mecklenburg after the Second World War. The museum offers guided tours for groups and individuals. The Sternberger Seenland Nature Park offers a different perspective: its deeply incised breakthrough valleys along the Warnow, numerous lakes, picturesque hills and extensive forests are especially inviting for hiking and cycling.
The historic Molli narrow-gauge railway is also part of the wider Rostock destination. It runs between Kühlungsborn and Bad Doberan and is the oldest narrow-gauge railway on the Baltic coast. Alongside nature and culture, this makes a specific railway line and its history additional travel interests in their own right.
