Discover Rerik between the Baltic Sea and the Salzhaff
Accommodation in Rerik
Rerik lies between the Baltic Sea and the Salzhaff. In front of the Baltic seaside resort stretches a fine sandy beach about six kilometres long, inviting visitors to swim and enjoy leisure activities by the sea. There are also opportunities for water sports, walks and discovering the town’s history. When planning your holiday, you can therefore choose from a range of interests and search for accommodation based on the experiences that matter most to you.
Water sports between the Baltic Sea and the Salzhaff
Rerik offers opportunities for surfing in the Baltic Sea and the shallow Salzhaff; the two bodies of water are about 200 metres apart. Two surf schools in Rerik offer windsurfing lessons. Beginners can practise in the calmer Salzhaff, while experienced surfers can head out onto the Baltic Sea. Rowing and sailing are also possible in both areas. The water-based activities therefore vary not only by sport, but also by the body of water.
Stand-up paddleboarding is possible on the usually calm Salzhaff; taster courses are scheduled for the peak season. Also planned for the peak season are guided circular trips of around two hours on the Salzhaff aboard the MS “Ostseebad Rerik”, led by the captain. Check the current course and trip dates before making plans. Those who wish to fish can do so from the pier, the beach or a boat; check the applicable requirements in advance. The Haffanleger, a stopover for waterway travellers, is located on the Salzhaff right next to the fishing landing stage.
Coastal paths, walks and cycling tours
The Baltic seaside resort is surrounded by protected landscapes that invite visitors to explore and enjoy long walks. One specific route is the Haffpromenade: it runs from the mother-and-child convalescent home along the Salzhaff to Haffplatz and is ideal for a leisurely stroll. If you would like to include it in your route planning, check the current route.
A scenic stretch of steep coastline lies northeast of the pier, bordered by a strip of coastal woodland and the upper shore path. The hilly coastal area around Rerik also offers opportunities for cycling along the Baltic coast. One suggested cycling route starts and ends in Rerik and is about 23 kilometres long. This gives you different ways to spend the day: longer walks, a path along the Salzhaff or a coastal cycling tour.
Church, Schmiedeberg and megalithic tombs
St. John’s Church combines local history with a distinctive interior: it was completely remodelled in the 17th and 18th centuries and given Baroque furnishings. For centuries, the church served as a vital landmark for sailors and fishermen. Free guided tours of the church are scheduled for Mondays at 10 a.m. from 15 May to 15 September. Check whether the tours are taking place before visiting.
Schmiedeberg is the remnant of an old Slavic hillfort. From there, you can enjoy panoramic views of the town, the Baltic Sea and the surrounding area. There are also eight well-maintained megalithic tombs in the vicinity of Rerik, marked for visitors with information boards. Guided tours of the tombs are regularly scheduled on Thursdays from May to September; check the current dates in advance.
Choose the right focus for your trip
When searching for accommodation in Rerik, it helps to first consider the kind of daily routine you want: should your stay focus more on the beach and water sports, or on walks, cycling tours and local history? The Baltic Sea and the Salzhaff are about 200 metres apart, and water sports conditions differ depending on the body of water. This comparison offers a practical starting point for planning your holiday together, without requiring you to commit to a single activity.
