Heiligendamm: Seaside Resort History and Baltic Sea Beach
Accommodation in Heiligendamm
Seaside Resort History and Neoclassical Architecture
Heiligendamm has been a seaside resort since 1793. The present-day Kurhaus, inaugurated in 1817, became a landmark of the resort. By 1870, an impressive neoclassical ensemble of white lodging, bathing, and social buildings had been built in Heiligendamm.
After years of reconstruction, the historic ensemble of buildings opened as the Grand Hotel Heiligendamm in 2003. The Lutheran Church of Heiligendamm is a listed church building; it was solemnly consecrated on July 31, 1904. The town’s history thus encompasses various architectural and historical milestones: the seaside resort, the neoclassical ensemble, a protected church building, and its later reconstruction.
Beach and Sea Views
The beach is wide and fine-sanded, sloping gently down to the Baltic Sea. At the Heiligendamm pier, you can watch sunsets and enjoy panoramic views of the sea and coast. The beach and pier offer different experiences: sand and the gentle slope shape your time on the beach, while the pier draws your gaze to the sea and coastal landscape. This distinction can help you plan a day by the water based on whether you prefer time on the beach or the views.
When looking for accommodation, it’s worth first deciding what you want to focus on during your stay: Would you like to make time for the resort’s history, enjoy the beach and pier, or go on the coastal hike?
Exploring on Foot and by Bike
A 14.7-kilometer, moderately challenging coastal hike leads from Kühlungsborn via Heiligendamm to Bad Doberan. The 14.7 kilometers indicate the route’s total distance; the moderate rating adds information about its difficulty. Heiligendamm lies on the route between the two named towns. If you plan to do the hike, take into account both the full distance and its difficulty rating.
The cycling tour from Heiligendamm around Lake Conventer takes you through the 216-hectare Lake Conventer Nature Reserve. The area is of great importance to birds as a breeding and resting ground. The tour thus combines cycling with a specific nature theme: the protected area and its role for birds.
The Heiligendamm spa forest covers 74,000 square meters, or 7.4 hectares. At 216 hectares, the Lake Conventer Nature Reserve is almost thirty times as large. This comparison shows two different scales of natural areas that can add to your trip planning.
Molli, Events, and Getting Here
The Molli runs daily from Bad Doberan to Heiligendamm station. If you plan to use this connection, check the timetable before your trip.
The 15.4-kilometer Molli journey takes you along narrow streets and past meadows and fields to the region’s holiday resorts and destinations. These landscape views offer a different experience from the beach, pier, and coastal hike.
The annual torchlight swim at the Heiligendamm pier combines rescue drills with an atmospheric torchlight swim in the Baltic Sea. If you’d like to include the event in your trip, check the dates for your travel year.
If you’re arriving by car, note the parking rule that applies throughout the town: Heiligendamm has a zone-wide no-stopping restriction. You may park in public areas only in designated, clearly signposted parking spaces.
