The Baltic seaside resort of Nienhagen brings together two distinct aspects of a stay: the coast and the forest. The steep coast is part of the coastal landscape; the approximately 180-hectare Ghost Forest surrounds the resort. By the sea, there is a sandy natural beach, as well as opportunities for surfing and sailing. In the forest, hiking trails wind through a mixed woodland with old trees. A traditional August festival and public events add cultural dates to the calendar. If you are looking for accommodation, you can first consider whether beach days, walks or a particular event date should take priority.

Baltic Sea Beach and Steep Coast

Nienhagen’s 4 km-long sandy natural beach can be reached via three stairways, a natural access point and a winding, accessible route. The water slopes gently and is particularly suitable for children and seniors. Along the steep coast, there are also stretches of beach with fine sand that are suitable for swimming.

The steep coast consists of deposits from the Ice Age and is subject to strict protection measures. There are also opportunities for surfing and sailing along this stretch of coast. The Nienhagen reef research platform is clearly visible from the beach promenade. During a stay by the sea, you can experience different aspects of this stretch of coast, from swimming and water sports to views of the platform.

Walks in the Ghost Forest

The Ghost Forest is a mixed woodland of approximately 180 hectares, forms part of the Stolteraa nature reserve and surrounds the seaside resort of Nienhagen. It is home to oak, beech, hornbeam and ash trees up to 170 years old, as well as scenic hiking trails.

On extended walks, you will encounter bizarre, fairytale-like trees and untamed nature. The forest offers a different focus from the beach: hiking trails and the distinctive appearance of the trees rather than swimming and water sports. Nature lovers will find plenty to discover on a walk through the mixed woodland.
