Steffenshagen: Village Church, Traditional Crafts and Green Landscapes
Accommodation in Steffenshagen
Steffenshagen combines the character of a green village with a striking village church, traditional crafts and a landscape that stretches up to the hills. Meadows, pastures and forests define the area; from the hills, views open up towards the nearby Baltic Sea. As a peaceful alternative to the busier Baltic Sea resorts, Steffenshagen appeals to travellers who want to make the inland region the focus of their holiday plans.
Landscape between the village and the KĂĽhlung hills
The green surroundings give the area its rural character. Niedersteffenshagen is also considered a suitable destination for nature lovers and hikers. The Kühlung landscape around Niedersteffenshagen features hills and valleys, deciduous and mixed forests, and small streams. This scenery differs from the views towards the Baltic Sea: here, wooded heights, valleys and waterways take centre stage. So if you are planning your trip around different landscape themes, it is worth considering the distinctive qualities of each—the green village of Steffenshagen and the varied Kühlung landscape near Niedersteffenshagen.
A village church with a history
Steffenshagen’s village church is considered one of the largest and most imposing village churches in Mecklenburg. Its founding dates back to monks from the Cistercian monastery in Althof-Doberan. Individual details also tell of different periods: the church received its first organ in 1901, built by court organ builder Marcus Runge. The carved altar is believed to have been created between 1450 and 1500 in an artists’ workshop in Rostock. This one building thus brings together a foundation story rooted in the Cistercian community, the history of an organ dating from 1901, and an older altar whose date is only an estimate.
Watch and discover traditional crafts
At the old bakehouse on Thielke’s heritage farm, you can watch bread being baked. Traditional blacksmithing techniques are demonstrated at Bernd Thielke’s heritage forge. You can also watch potter Christoph Ohse shape vessels on the potter’s wheel. Each activity has a different focus: bread baking centres on a familiar food, while blacksmithing and pottery involve working with materials and tools. Guided tours are also available at the museum forge in Steffenshagen.
Another attraction is the post mill. It was relocated from Buschkuhnsdorf in Saxony-Anhalt to Steffenshagen in 1998 and is open to visitors. It is also one of the attractions along the Kühlung Cycle Route. The mill’s move gives it its own story, while its connection to the cycle route places it among a wider selection of sights. An atelier with an exhibition gallery is also located on the grounds of a farm associated with Wilhelmsburg. It was created by painter and graphic artist Herbert Malchow. The local range of themes thus extends from historic buildings and crafts to visual art.
The character of a trip in the wider Rostock destination
The wider Rostock destination offers further landscape and cultural themes. The Rostock region is bordered by 62 kilometres of Baltic Sea coastline, with a number of seaside resorts. The historic narrow-gauge Molli railway runs between Kühlungsborn and Bad Doberan and is the oldest narrow-gauge railway on the Baltic Sea coast. Sternberger Seenland Nature Park offers a different kind of landscape: its deeply incised breakthrough valleys along the Warnow, numerous lakes, hills and extensive forests are especially inviting for hiking and cycling. When looking for accommodation in the wider Rostock destination, you can first consider whether your trip is centred more on Steffenshagen’s peaceful inland setting, coastal themes, or a landscape rich in lakes and forests.
