An octagonal church, a harbor and several named trails give Ludorf a distinct character shaped by cultural history and nature. Local attractions can be combined with routes that take in Ludorf, the shore of the Müritz and Röbel. When planning your trip, you can therefore decide whether architectural history, the water or an active outing should be the main focus.

Church and traces of local history

The branch church of St. Mary and St. Lawrence in Ludorf was consecrated in 1346. It is early Gothic and octagonal. An octagon has eight sides, so you can readily recognize its distinctive shape without any prior knowledge of art history. Architecture enthusiasts will find a clear feature here that sets the church building apart from the later historical traces in the village.

The history of the von Knuth family is also visible in the church: the family crypt dates from 1736. It still contains nine coffins and a small child’s coffin. Outside the church, Ludorf’s medieval motte can still be made out as a small mound. The church, crypt and motte thus offer different ways to explore Ludorf’s past.

In 2026, the branch church was open Monday to Friday, from June 1 to September 30, from 2:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m. If you plan to visit at another time, please check the opening hours in effect then.

Harbor and trails with different destinations

The Ludorf harbor is a waterway rest stop with 40 berths and a steamer landing. This gives the village a direct connection to the water, alongside its church and local history. The number of berths indicates the size of the rest stop, while the landing provides another named landmark at the harbor.

The Müritz Circular Trail includes an 8 km section from Vipperow to Ludorf and a 9 km section from Ludorf to Röbel harbor. You can compare the two routes by length, but they also differ in their starting and ending points. When choosing, consider not only the distance but also the direction and destination of each section.

The Müritz Hiking Trail runs along the “Großer Schwerin and Steinhorn” nature reserve to Röbel, with a stop at the “Gnever Kuhle” viewpoint. The reserve and named viewpoint help you orient yourself when choosing a route. Check current trail conditions before setting out.

Exploring nature

A natural history tour led by ornithologist Rainer Schwarz offers a different perspective on the natural landscape. It goes from the Ludorf fields along the shore of the Müritz to the viewpoint in the “Großer Schwerin and Steinhorn” nature reserve. Unlike the routes described above, this tour is guided. Regular walks take place in autumn; walks can also be arranged on request. Ask in advance about current dates.

The options described offer different points of reference for planning your day: the Müritz Circular Trail focuses on two route lengths and their endpoints, while the Müritz Hiking Trail follows the nature reserve and stops at Gnever Kuhle. The natural history tour adds the guidance of an ornithologist. This allows you to choose between a cycling route, a hiking trail with a named viewpoint and a guided nature outing.

Ludorf as a place to search for your trip

Search for accommodation based on the experiences that matter to you. The church, crypt and motte invite you to explore cultural history, while the harbor and trails offer different focal points. Ludorf features in both descriptions of the Müritz Circular Trail: one section ends here, and the next begins in the village. The natural history tour also starts in the Ludorf fields. This lets you match Ludorf as a destination to the sights and routes that matter to you, without basing your plans on just one outing. If your travel group has varied interests, you can consider architecture, the harbor and nature tours as different focal points.
