Schwarz lies on the shore of Schwarzer See, surrounded by extensive forests, rolling fields and meadows. To the south, the lake flows into Zethner See. Water, open countryside and historic village culture thus offer different ways to discover the area: by the lake, by bike and through its architectural history.

Village Church and Village History

Schwarz Village Church was built in 1767 in the Neoclassical style and has a projecting west tower. Its interior furnishings have been completely preserved and are designed in simple Rococo forms. The organ also has a clearly established date: Carl Börger built it in 1907. Anyone interested in architecture can see the Neoclassical design alongside the Rococo forms inside the church.

The Schwarz local history room presents the village’s rural history. Its exhibition is devoted to historic village life as well as fossils, minerals and glacial erratics. Another insight into the local geological history can be found in the centre of the village: the boulder and stone garden is part of the Ice Age Route and displays specimens from the area around Schwarz. Opposite the garden, the former school building houses a scientifically catalogued stone collection. This makes it possible to combine a walk through the village with different ways of exploring the history of the landscape. Check the local history room’s opening hours before visiting.

Schwarzer See and Zethner See

Motorboats are prohibited on Schwarzer See, but fishing and paddling are still possible. The bathing area on Zethner See near Schwarz Camping 48a offers free parking, toilets, showers and a campsite. As individual facilities may change, it is worth checking the information before your visit. The lake and bathing area give your stay a different focus from the church, local history room and stone garden: here, water activities and time by the shore take centre stage.

Cycling through Schwarz

The 666-kilometre signposted Ice Age Route passes directly through the municipality of Schwarz. The “Southern Lakes Loop” cycling tour also runs through Schwarz before continuing to Mirow. The two route descriptions provide different kinds of guidance: the Ice Age Route’s total length and signposting are specified, while the Southern Lakes Loop description gives its route through Schwarz and its continuation to Mirow. This allows you to distinguish between the routes based on which route information matters for your plans, without assuming an unprovided journey time or difficulty level.

The boulder and stone garden connects the local Ice Age Route with a specific stop in the village centre. Visitors interested in cycling and geology will find two related themes in one place: the signposted route through the municipality and the collection of boulders and stones from the surrounding area. For a culture-focused visit, the village church and local history room take centre stage instead. These different highlights can help you decide whether Schwarz is a suitable base for your trip.

Setting in the Mecklenburg Lake District

Within the wider Mecklenburg Lake District destination, Müritz National Park offers its own focus on nature and landscapes. It is characterised by forests, moors, lakes and broad meadows. The Müritz National Park hiking trail explores this landscape over nine stages, passing lakes, ancient forests and inland dunes, and leading to the source of the Havel. Another example in the region is the Damerower Werder bison reserve: it lies on a peninsula in Lake Kölpinsee, within the Nossentiner/Schwinzer Heath Nature Park, where visitors can observe bison. These destinations offer nature experiences across the region, while Schwarz’s distinctive sights include its village church, Schwarzer See and local collections.
