Accommodation in Alzey
Alzey brings the city’s history to life in very different places: in the museum housed in the former municipal hospital, at the Renaissance building on Fischmarkt, and among the surviving remains of the medieval fortifications. There are also exhibitions on various topics, a cultural walking trail through the vineyards and the Wartbergbad swimming pool.
Museum and city history
The Museum of the City of Alzey was founded in 1906 and is located in the former municipal hospital in the town centre. A dedicated section focuses on the Jewish history of the Alzey region; another is devoted to Volker von Alzey, the knightly minstrel from the Nibelungenlied. The Steinhalle, an extension of the museum, houses significant Roman stone monuments from Alzey. Regional history, literary tradition and archaeological evidence thus offer different ways to explore the past.
The former town hall on Fischmarkt is a Renaissance building constructed in 1586 using stones from Weidas Monastery. The building has a carillon featuring a figure of Volker von Alzey. At Rossmarkt, the Rossmarkt Fountain and two decorative half-timbered houses shape the scene; they date from the 17th and early 18th centuries. Remains of the medieval town wall and the Metzgerturm tower have been preserved at Hexenbleiche. The tower is probably the oldest in Alzey’s fortifications.
The Wartbergturm is also one of Alzey’s historic landmarks and serves as a lookout tower. The current tower was rebuilt in 1989, after it had been destroyed and rebuilt once before. Together, these sites bring different chapters of the city’s history to life, from Roman stone monuments to Renaissance and half-timbered architecture and the remains of medieval fortifications.
City walk, vineyards and swimming
The Stadtspaziergang fĂĽr Alle (City Walk for Everyone) passes through the centre of Alzey and takes in twelve sights. Eight stops are fully accessible to wheelchair users. If this information is important for your plans, check it again before you travel.
The Alzeyer Kunst- und Kulturwanderweg (Alzey Art and Culture Trail) offers a different focus: it runs through the vineyards and includes 20 works of art and 22 vineyard houses. The two routes therefore differ in emphasis: the city walk leads to sights in the centre, while the cultural trail connects art with vineyard themes. Check the trail’s route and accessibility details before making specific plans.
For sports and leisure, the Wartbergbad has four solar-heated pools. These include a 25-metre swimming pool and a non-swimmer pool with a 70-metre waterslide. Pool facilities and seasonal opening arrangements may change, so check the latest information before planning a day of swimming.
If your travel group has a mix of interests, you can weigh up the options by what they offer: central sights on the city walk, art and vineyard houses along the trail, or swimming at the Wartbergbad. This lets you plan your itinerary around the things that matter to you during your stay.
Alzey in the wider Alzey-Worms destination
In the wider Alzey-Worms destination, the exhibitions at the Museum of the City of Alzey also offer a broad perspective across time. The prehistory and early history exhibition traces the cultural and historical development of central Rheinhessen from the Neolithic through the Bronze, Iron and Roman periods to the Merovingian period—a span of more than 6,000 years. The geology and palaeontology exhibition focuses on the Mainz Basin. Minerals, particularly fossils, help visitors understand its development over millions of years.
