Sandstone gives Flonheim a distinctive common thread: it represents both the town’s geological history and its later use as a building material. Together with local history, paths through the landscape, and wine offerings, this opens up a range of different travel interests.

Sandstone and Local History

The Flonheim local history museum presents how Flonheim sandstone was formed and how it was later used as a building material. The Remembrance Room is dedicated to personal stories from local life, conveyed through documents, pictures, and objects. This brings two different perspectives side by side: the history of a type of rock and personal life stories from the town.

The Flonheim Jewish Cemetery is also one of the town’s historical landmarks. It contains around 60 gravestones, most of them made of Flonheim sandstone and arranged in rows. The approximate number and the material give this site a tangible connection to the local stone tradition.

Trails, Quarries, and Landscapes

The theme of stone continues along the circular trails. One trail leads to the andesite quarries in the Aulheim Valley; another passes by the Flonheim sandstone quarries. This makes it possible to experience the landscape through two different types of rock: andesite in the Aulheim Valley and sandstone, which also played a role as a building material.

The Hiwweltour Aulheim Valley trail leads through meadows, past trulli, and through forests. Along the way, it offers sweeping views across the Rheinhessen Switzerland. The route brings together open countryside, forests, and the characteristic little vineyard huts in one hiking experience. Those who enjoy combining different landscape impressions will find more than just a single viewpoint here.

In the wider Alzey-Worms destination, the white trulli in and around Flonheim are vineyard-related huts. They were built by itinerant workers from Lombardy. This history adds a cultural perspective on the people who helped shape the landscape.

Wine and Mills in the Wider Destination

The Klosterhof wine shop offers wine tastings and wine by the glass, as well as coffee, homemade cake, and a small snack to accompany your wine. If you plan to visit the wine shop, check its current opening status before your trip.

In the wider Alzey-Worms destination, the Museum of the City of Alzey traces the cultural history of inner Rheinhessen in its prehistory and early history exhibition: from the Neolithic period through the Bronze, Iron, and Roman Ages to the Merovingian period, spanning more than 6,000 years. Another exhibition explores the geology and paleontology of the Mainz Basin. Minerals, especially fossils, make its development over millions of years tangible. The exhibitions set different timescales side by side: human cultural history and the much longer history of the Earth.

Another mill-related attraction in the wider Alzey-Worms destination is the GeistermĂĽhle, a historic mill estate with half-timbered buildings and a fully preserved watermill. Mill tours explain the journey from grain to flour; the estate is now operated as a winery.
