Alzey-Worms is a destination for day trips and holidays where vineyard landscapes, paths and cultural history appeal to a variety of travel interests. The places and activities below offer some concrete ideas.

Vineyards and landscape views

In the Alzeyer Land, gently rolling hills covered in vines are as much a part of the landscape as wooded areas, including the state forest in the Vorholz near Offenheim. A striking viewpoint is the 246-metre-high Petersberg between Gau-Odernheim and Bechtolsheim. It is covered in vines and offers far-reaching views across the Wonnegau and the hilly countryside. Vineyards, wooded areas and open, distant views thus provide contrasting impressions of the landscape.

History spanning very different periods

The prehistory and early history exhibition at the Museum of the City of Alzey traces the cultural development of central Rheinhessen, from the Neolithic Age through the Bronze, Iron and Roman Ages to the Merovingian period. It covers a span of more than 6,000 years. A second perspective is offered by the geology and palaeontology exhibition. It focuses on the Mainz Basin; minerals, especially fossils, help visitors understand its development over millions of years. Human history and the history of the Earth thus represent very different timescales.

Alzey Castle can also be explored on a walk around the town, either with trained guides or independently. Visitors interested in architectural and local history can make this walk a focus of their trip alongside the exhibitions.

Mills, trulli and historic paths

The Geistermühle is a historic mill complex with half-timbered buildings and a fully preserved watermill; guided tours of the mill are available. The white trulli stand out in and around Flonheim: these small vineyard-related buildings were constructed by migrant workers from Lombardy. Also in Flonheim, the Jewish cemetery has around 60 gravestones arranged in rows, most of them made of Flonheim sandstone.

The BohnErzWeg connects Dittelsheim-Heßloch, Framersheim, Gau-Heppenheim, Hochborn and Monzernheim. It leads to mining sites and a reconstructed ore-washing facility; information boards provide insights into this aspect of history. A different geological discovery awaits along the “Strandpfad der Sinne” (Path of the Senses by the Shore), south of Eckelsheim. It follows the shoreline slope of the former Steigerberg Island. Within sight of the surf cliff at the Eckelsheim gravel pit, rocks, cobbles, gravel and sand appear in succession, along with plants from the Earth’s geological past.

Compare hiking and cycling routes

The Alzey Art & Culture Hiking Trail runs through the vineyards and features 20 works of art and 22 vineyard houses. At the trullo on Adelberg in Flonheim, a specific hiking route leads to a destination: the trullo can be reached on foot via the Hiwweltour Aulheimer Tal, and tables and benches are located right by it.

Cycling routes also offer different landscapes. The Selztal Cycle Route follows the Selz through the hilly countryside of Rheinhessen. The Mill Cycle Route links historic mills and passes through attractive wine villages; the Hiwwel Route crosses hills that repeatedly offer beautiful views. The Rhine Terrace Route passes through wine villages and vineyard slopes, while the Zellertal Cycle Route branches off into the Zellertal valley. Each route description highlights something different, from rivers and rolling countryside to mills, villages and vineyards.

Cycling services in Alzey-Worms include e-bike rentals and charging, as well as facilities for inflating tyres and carrying out basic repairs. Before your trip, check where these services are available. Cycling route conditions and signage may also change, so checking them before setting off can help with planning.

Food and drink, and choosing a starting point

At the Vinothek Klosterhof in Flonheim, visitors can sample wines and enjoy them by the glass. Coffee, homemade cake and a small snack to accompany the wine are also available. First decide which places and routes you would like to include, then consider which location might suit you as a starting point.
