The Hiwweltour Aulheimer Tal gives Lonsheim a clear connection to hiking: this premium circular trail crosses Lonsheim territory through vineyards, meadows and woodland. Viewpoints add to the scenery, including the observation tower on the Hemm. Hikers can therefore enjoy different facets of the surrounding area, rather than just a single type of landscape.

Access to the Hiwweltour

From Lonsheim, hikers can reach the trailhead via the car park beside the Catholic church. From there, an orange-marked, signposted access path leads to the main trail after approximately 800 metres. The marked access path makes it easier to find your way from the car park to the main trail. As signposting and access may change, it is worth checking the current signs before setting out.

On the circular hike, vineyards, meadows and woodland take turns as landscape features. The viewpoints add further highlights, including the observation tower on the Hemm. When choosing a route, you can take into account not only the circular trail itself, but also the varied scenery and the viewpoint as a landmark for the day.

Views and remembrance on the Hemm

From the observation tower on the Hemm, the view stretches across Lonsheim and the rolling hills of Rheinhessen. The tower is also a memorial: it was built in memory of the participants in the Franco-Prussian War of 1870–71. Panoramic views and historical remembrance come together in this structure. This gives the viewpoint an added significance that goes beyond the landscape views.

There is also a resting area with tables and benches for hikers, inviting them to linger. If you plan to take a break there, it is worth briefly checking the current condition of the facilities: the tables and benches may have changed or may temporarily be unavailable.

Culture in the wider Alzey-Worms destination

If you would like to include culture in your plans alongside hiking, the wider Alzey-Worms destination offers other points of interest. The prehistoric and early history exhibition at the Museum of the City of Alzey traces the cultural history of central Rheinhessen from the Neolithic through the Bronze, Iron and Roman periods to the Merovingian period. It spans more than 6,000 years. The geology and palaeontology exhibition offers a different perspective: it focuses on the Mainz Basin and illustrates its development over millions of years through minerals, particularly fossils.

Alzey-Worms also brings culture and landscape together outdoors: the Alzey Art & Culture Trail runs through the vineyards and features 20 works of art and 22 vineyard cottages. This gives it a different focus from the Hiwweltour Aulheimer Tal, where the circular hike and the succession of vineyards, meadows and woodland take centre stage. This creates a clear contrast when choosing the focus of your holiday: hiking and views in Lonsheim, or cultural history in the museum and art along a hiking trail in the wider destination.

When looking for a place to stay, it helps to first decide which of these interests you want to shape your trip. Lonsheim’s experiences offer a clear starting point for a hiking holiday; the examples from Alzey-Worms mentioned here broaden the regional perspective to include history, geology and art. This distinction can guide your further research without treating the different places or offerings as the same.
