Vineyards shape the landscape of Gau-Heppenheim, while churches and vineyard huts tell the story of the village. Various paths lead through the vines or through a green hedgerow landscape, and viewpoints open up views in different directions. When planning your visit, you can choose to focus on winegrowing, hikes or local history.

Vineyard hiking trail through the vines

The 2.3-kilometre vineyard hiking trail runs through the vineyards. There is information about wine at several points along the route, which also offers views of the surrounding landscape. About halfway along, there is a picnic area with a table. Winegrowing and the landscape are not separate topics here; you encounter them together along the route.

Wine is also an agricultural product associated with Gau-Heppenheim’s vineyard-shaped landscape. Check the route distance and conditions locally before setting out.

Churches and local history

The old village centre includes traditional buildings and two notable churches. St. Urban is one of Gau-Heppenheim’s historic churches. It retains Romanesque elements and has a High Gothic choir; the sacristy dates from 1505. The year 1567 is inscribed on the nave, while the ceiling paintings were renewed in 1726.

St. Urban is considered the only church in Rheinhessen dedicated to Saint Urban, the patron saint of winegrowers. Its dedication connects the church in a distinctive way with winegrowing, which also shapes the village landscape.

Trails for different activities

The Gau-Heppenheim Bee Nature Trail runs for 170 metres along the vineyards. The village loop has no fixed starting or ending point and can be started from any direction. It is paved along its entire length. The restored Ruhweg offers a different route, running through a green hedgerow landscape from Dornweide to the water house.

There are places to sit at the Dornweide prayer site, where hikers can take a break. The 8-kilometre Bohnerz hiking trail connects Gau-Heppenheim with Dittelsheim-HeĂźloch, Framersheim, Hochborn and Monzernheim. Comparing the route distances, the Bee Nature Trail is 170 metres long, the vineyard hiking trail 2.3 kilometres and the Bohnerz hiking trail 8 kilometres. These distances give you an idea of the scale of each outing.

Vineyard huts and viewpoints

“s Becke Heisje” is a historic vineyard hut of the kind characteristic of Rheinhessen’s vineyard huts. Becks Wingertsheisje was built from stones collected in the surrounding vineyards and fields in 1909. Its elevated position offers a view over Gau-Heppenheim towards Alzey; visibility depends on the conditions at the time.

The viewpoints also offer different outlooks: from the Hans-Otto bench, you can look over Gau-Heppenheim towards the Taunus. Schöne Aussicht is about 235 metres above sea level. Together with the views from the vineyard hiking trail, these spots offer different perspectives on the landscape without needing to be combined into a single route.

Culture in the wider Alzey-Worms destination

In the wider Alzey-Worms destination, the Alzey City Museum offers a distinct cultural and historical experience. Its prehistory and early history exhibition traces the development of inner Rheinhessen from the Neolithic through the Bronze, Iron and Roman periods to the Merovingian period. It spans more than 6,000 years.

Plan your stay

When looking for accommodation, you could start by asking which themes you want to shape your stay: hiking trails and vineyards, viewpoints or architectural history.
