Mandel is a wine village surrounded by vineyards, meadows and forests. Its history of more than a thousand years comes to life in historic buildings and on a cultural trail. The routes described range from a 2.2-kilometre historic circuit to a nearly seven-kilometre loop around the village. You can therefore plan your stay around local history, the landscape and your preferred distance.

Local history in its buildings

Mandel was first mentioned in 962 as a possession of St Maximin’s Abbey in Trier. From 1439, the von Dalberg family held the lordship and granted Mandel as a fief to the Koppenstein family. The Koppensteins exercised local rule until 1768. These dates provide specific chronological milestones in the village’s history.

Koppenstein Castle is a Renaissance hunting lodge dating from 1624. Its distinctive features include a projecting five-sided stair tower and a 1722 coat of arms above the entrance. Mandel itself also has historic buildings from various periods, including the Protestant church of 1829/30, the Romanesque brick church of St Anthony from 1897, and an early neoclassical historic rectory. Their different dates and architectural styles invite you to compare the individual buildings.

The Koppenstein Castle cultural trail is a 2.2-kilometre historic circuit. It takes you through Mandel’s history and offers insights into village life in earlier times. It starts at the centrally located village square, where a walled castle garden once stood. Free parking is available right by the village square; check the local information before you arrive. Check the trail conditions before setting out.

Circular routes of different lengths

For a longer walk, there is the Weiherbach Nordic walking tour: it runs for nearly seven kilometres around Mandel and starts and ends at the Schlossberghalle car park. Blue signs marked “Tour 4” indicate the route. Check the signs on site before you set off. The cultural trail is considerably shorter by comparison; the Weiherbach loop offers a longer route around the village. This lets you choose between a compact historic walk and a more extended loop when planning your day.

The 105-kilometre Sponheim Way is also a historic themed hiking trail. It passes through or near Mandel and crosses Soonwald-Nahe Nature Park. Alongside the two local circular routes, it offers a longer trail on a regional scale. Another activity with a different starting point is the rail-bike tour: it starts in Staudernheim, around 14 kilometres from Mandel, and follows a disused railway line to Altenglan. Check the operator’s information before your trip.

Wine village and regional routes

For cycling, the Kleinbahn cycle loop is one option: from Mandel, you can reach it via a cycle path of around three kilometres to RĂĽdesheim. The circular route is approximately 37 kilometres long and includes around 370 metres of elevation gain. These figures give you a specific guide for planning your route. The Nahe Cycle Route, in turn, follows the Nahe from its source at Lake Bostalsee to its confluence with the Rhine near Bingen; its description places it within a broad regional route.

Several wineries are part of the wine village: Weingut Manfred & Gernot Bamberger, Weingut Baumberger, Weingut Römerhof Ralf Baumberger, Weingut Heinrich Brück, Weingut Sonnenhof Michael Gräff, Weingut Volker Krug, Weingut Reinhold Reimann, Weingut Sulzbacher and Winzerhof Wallhäuser. It is best to check opening hours and wine-tasting options directly with each winery.

When looking for accommodation in Mandel, the village’s history and the starting points of the two circular routes can be useful guides. The rail-bike tour starts in Staudernheim; from Mandel, you can reach the Kleinbahn cycle loop via the cycle path to Rüdesheim.
