In Allenbach, a protected pond biotope, trails through the HunsrĂĽck landscape and visible traces of a long industrial history come together. This makes the village an interesting place for days when you want to combine nature with historical discoveries. When choosing accommodation, you can consider whether you want to focus your stay more on the pond and its surroundings or on longer hikes and bike tours.

Pond and National Park: Experience nature in different ways

Allenbach lies right next to HunsrĂĽck-Hochwald National Park, which is accessible from the municipality for exploration. It covers 10,000 hectares of the HunsrĂĽck highlands and is considered a hotspot of biodiversity. Its forests and diverse flora and fauna are characteristic features. Six Dream Loops run directly through the National Park. Premium trails in the HunsrĂĽck usually follow narrow, natural paths alongside streams and rock formations, passing viewpoints as well as natural and cultural monuments.

Another way to experience nature is at Allenbach Pond: the biotope comprises approximately one hectare of water and three hectares of natural area dedicated to nature conservation. Along the approximately one-kilometre loop, you can stop and take in the surroundings at numerous seating areas. The circular trail is suitable for pushchairs and wheelchairs; a water-treading pool is right next to it, and restroom facilities are available on site. Local maintenance can affect the condition of the trail and facilities, so it is worth checking briefly before your visit. Important for planning: boating, fishing and swimming are not permitted in the pond.

The “Between the Forests” Dream Loop starts at the pond. It passes the historic Allenbach grain mill and includes a section of the Idarbach Nature Trail. At Krahloch Geopark, stones and information boards illustrate geology, rocks, mining and the natural surroundings. The nature trail by the pond, in turn, introduces you to the diversity of local flora and fauna. As route information may change, check the current route before setting off.

A short loop or a challenging bike tour?

The pond loop and Stage 1 of the National Park cycling route require very different amounts of time and effort. The loop around the pond is approximately one kilometre long; the cycling route is classified as difficult, at 55.5 kilometres with 949.1 metres of elevation gain. It ends in Allenbach and is intended for sporty e-bike riders. If you are looking for a longer, demanding tour, these figures provide a concrete guide; be sure to take possible detours into account before setting off.

The area around Allenbach also offers further opportunities to experience nature: the Idarbachtal Nature Trail is located there, and the wooded Hunsrück landscape shapes the surroundings. You can tailor your stay in different ways—with a manageable loop around the biotope, a themed hike or the considerably longer cycling stage. These experiences are not interchangeable: the pond focuses on nature conservation and observation, while the cycling route offers a sporting challenge with Allenbach as its destination.

Industrial history, church and castle

From the Middle Ages until the end of the 19th century, Allenbach was an industrial centre. Two copper smelters are recorded with different dates: the old one from 1400, the new one from 1450. Remains of the former smelting site are still visible. The course of the former water channel can also be traced in the meadows below Allenbach. These traces add a historical layer to the landscape that differs from today’s nature trails.

In the village, the simple Neoclassical church adds to the historical impression. It was completed in 1781 and contains a Stumm Empire-style organ dating from 1832. The organ has one manual and twelve stops. Allenbach Castle is a listed monument. It can be visited as part of Open Monument Day; plan your visit around the event date. You can reach the castle by taking bus route 800, 845 or 890 to the Allenbach stop and then continuing on foot. Check the current timetable before departure.

The trails and sights described here give you different options for planning your day, without every activity involving the same level of effort or taking the same amount of time.
