Kuckuckstein Castle: Architecture and History

Kuckuckstein Castle combines medieval architecture with Neo-Gothic elements. The tower is 37 meters high, and the walls are up to four meters thick. These dimensions give the complex a distinctive architectural profile. In 2021, the castle was recognized as a cultural monument of national significance.

Historical connections include Napoleon I’s visit on the night of September 9, 1813, Freemasonry and the Lodge Zu den drei Schwertern (At the Three Swords), as well as the expropriation in the 20th century. The historic Carlowitz Library returned to the castle in 2022. Together, these subjects offer different ways into the history of the complex, from a specific nighttime visit to the history of the library and the changes of the 20th century.

On selected Sundays, visitors can tour the castle and exhibition as part of guided tours and cultural events. Check current visiting options before you travel. On visiting days, a small café in the castle offers homemade food.

The Spindlerhof farm shop in Liebstadt-Döbra sells products grown and made on site, as well as goods from other producers. Bus route 204 also goes to the castle, stopping at Liebstadt Markt; from there, it is approximately an eight-minute walk. Check the timetable before traveling.
