Discover Dohna: nature trails, castles and St. Mary's Church
Accommodation in Dohna
The historic town of Dohna lies between Dresden, Saxon Switzerland and the Eastern Ore Mountains. Its attractions range from circular trails and birdlife to archaeological monuments and Late Gothic architecture. This gives you two distinct focuses to choose from when planning your trip: time outdoors or insights into history and culture. When looking for accommodation, you can start by considering which of these experiences you want to shape your stay most.
Circular trails, birdlife and geological features
The Spargründe offers a short and a long circular trail. The nature reserve encompasses streams, deciduous woodland, partly protected ground vegetation and a rich variety of birdlife. On a walk, you can therefore encounter a range of natural features: waterways, trees and shrubs, ground plants and birds. Rocky summits in the Spargründe also offer views of Dohna Castle and the town. This adds a view of the historic townscape to the natural surroundings.
Kahlbusch offers a different geological focus. This geological natural monument is a rhyolitic volcanic dome that rises around 45 metres above Dohna. Depressions up to six metres deep are considered fossil-bearing sites. Its volcanic form and the depressions considered to contain fossils give the natural experience here a distinctive geological aspect.
Castle history and Late Gothic architecture
Dohna's castles were among the most important castles in the medieval Margraviate of Meissen. The Burgberg and Robisch ramparts have been protected archaeological monuments since 1935. Dohna's castle history thus brings together two aspects: the medieval significance of the castles and the archaeological protection of the ramparts.
St. Mary's Church in Dohna is a three-aisled Late Gothic hall church, consecrated in 1489. Inside is a Late Gothic winged altar dating from 1518. The term hall church describes the architectural form; the altar adds its own art-historical dimension. Visits and tours can be arranged through the Dohna parish office. Confirm your appointment in advance. The church has been accessible to visitors with reduced mobility since 2009. There are 29 years between the church's consecration in 1489 and the winged altar dating from 1518.
Guided insights and practical information
The Dohna Local History Museum offers guided visits to its permanent and special exhibitions, as well as town tours of the old town, church and castle. You can explore individual historical topics in greater depth on a guided visit or tour. You should confirm dates in advance. Another notable feature is the Butchers' Fountain: the bronze fountain is 4.5 metres high and was inaugurated in 1912.
Dohna can be reached via the S 178 state road through the Müglitz Valley and via the Pirna interchange on the A 17. Take road conditions into account when travelling. Consider which experiences matter most to you, and assess accommodation locations according to your own itinerary.
