There are several ways to discover Gohrisch: explore its network of marked hiking trails, the caves at Kleinhennersdorfer Stein, or an exhibition on historic boundary stones. These experiences bring outdoor activities and scenery together with insights into natural and cultural history. Which of these interests you most may also influence your choice of accommodation and how you plan your days.

Hiking trails between viewpoints and the Painter’s Way

Gohrisch’s marked hiking trail network includes seven climate terrain trails and three educational trails focusing on the natural and cultural landscape. There are also mostly level paths with benches and rest areas that lead to viewpoints. Those interested in scenery and nature can explore a range of topics along the way. Individual routes and local conditions may vary, so check the latest trail information before setting out.

A considerably more demanding hike is the seventh stage of the Painter’s Way: it starts in Kurort Gohrisch and leads via Pfaffenstein to Königstein. The route is 16.6 kilometres long and rated challenging. It is therefore quite different from a day focused on the mostly level paths and their viewpoints. The Painter’s Way is exclusively a hiking trail and cannot be explored by bicycle or e-bike. Bus route 244 serves the Kurort Gohrisch, Parkplatz stop; check the current timetable when planning your trip.

Caves and traces of sandstone quarrying

The Lichterhöhle and the neighbouring Sand-Hampel-Höhle caves are located at Kleinhennersdorfer Stein, within the municipality of Gohrisch. Lichterhöhle is 20 metres long and 15 metres wide. It was formerly used for sandstone quarrying. Its dimensions, location and former use make it both a geological attraction and a reminder of local history. Access arrangements may vary; check the latest conditions before visiting.

Boundary stones in the Lapidarium

The Lapidarium in Kurort Gohrisch, at Sandweg 43b, offers a different kind of discovery. The exhibition focuses on forest and state boundary stones and explains the markings on them. This adds a cultural perspective on boundary markers and their inscriptions to the hiking and cave themes. If you enjoy combining nature and culture on a trip, Gohrisch offers a range of ideas for planning your days.

Beyond Gohrisch: the district

The Saxon Switzerland-Eastern Ore Mountains district, the wider travel destination that includes Gohrisch, is home to Saxon Switzerland National Park. It is Saxony’s only national park and Germany’s only rocky national park. Landscape protection areas also shape the wider region: the district currently has 16 areas covering a total of 97,200 hectares, or around 59 per cent of its area. This information applies to the district as a whole, not to Gohrisch alone.

Other regional highlights range from nature to industrial history. On the fortress plateau at Königstein Fortress, modern exhibitions and interactive stations bring the fortress’s history to life; there are also guided tours, hands-on activities and cultural events. Individual programmes may vary. The Altenberg Mining Museum provides an overview of the 550-year history of tin ore mining in Altenberg: mining began around 1440 and ended when operations ceased in 1991. These attractions add to the natural and cultural themes of the wider district without replacing Gohrisch’s local hiking trails, caves and exhibition.

Find accommodation to suit your travel plans

When looking for accommodation in Gohrisch, you can start by considering which experiences you want to focus on. A day tackling the challenging Painter’s Way stage calls for different planning than a day on the mostly level paths to the viewpoints. The caves and Lapidarium offer their own nature and culture themes. This way, your search can reflect your planned trip without assuming any particular amenities or location.
