Reinhardtsdorf-Schöna is a state-recognized resort and lies directly on the Malerweg. The Kaiserkrone rises above Schöna with three rocky peaks; climbing individual rocks offers unobstructed views in every direction. The Großer Zschirnstein is also within walking distance. Hiking, distinctive sandstone formations and sculpture offer different ways to spend your time here. When planning your trip, a first question is whether you want to focus mainly on the hiking trail, the rock formations or also the art in the village.

Hiking and rock formations

The Malerweg is a hiking-only trail and cannot be explored by bicycle or e-bike. The Großer Zschirnstein is another destination among the sandstone peaks and viewpoints that can be reached on foot. At the Kaiserkrone, climbing the individual rocks offers unobstructed views in every direction. Local access conditions can change, so check the situation before your visit. Conditions on hiking trails can also vary seasonally.

Sculpture on the Sculpture Trail

The local Sculpture Trail features works created during sculpture symposiums at the Reinhardtsdorf quarry. These symposiums have been held annually since 1974. This means you can discover the area not only through its rocks and hiking destinations, but also through sculptures made from local sandstone. Which works are currently on display and how access is arranged may change. Check current visiting options before your visit.

The wider region: Sächsische Schweiz-Osterzgebirge District

The wider destination of Sächsische Schweiz-Osterzgebirge District offers a broader perspective on nature and culture. Saxon Switzerland National Park is Saxony’s only national park and Germany’s only rocky national park. There are also different route profiles to consider when choosing your main activity: the Malerweg is reserved for hiking, while the Elbe Cycle Route runs for 40 kilometres through Saxon Switzerland.

The district’s cultural history also takes different forms. The Altenberg Mining Museum provides a comprehensive overview of the 550-year history of tin mining in Altenberg: mining began around 1440 and ended with the closure of the mines in 1991. Modern exhibitions and interactive stations on the fortress plateau of Königstein Fortress tell its story. Guided tours, hands-on activities and cultural events are also on offer; individual exhibitions and programmes may change. The annual “Specialty Weeks” are held in the Ore Mountains part of the district, celebrating local cuisine.
