Hohnstein – Rocks, Half-Timbered Houses and the Kasper Tradition
Accommodation in Hohnstein
Hohnstein combines a historic townscape with a striking rocky landscape. In the historic center, winding lanes run between half-timbered houses; forests, rocks, old masonry and the Elbe Sandstone landscape surround the town. Burg Hohnstein rises high on a rock above Hohnstein and the Polenztal valley. The town’s history, landscape and culture thus come together in several distinct themes for visitors.
Rocks, Water and Views
The Gautschgrotte is about a 15-minute walk from Hohnstein Market Square. Its rock edge measures 18 meters; in freezing winters, a large column of ice can form at its waterfall. This natural attraction combines rock and water with a spectacle that depends explicitly on winter conditions. The Napoleonschanze offers a different impression: it stands on the 392-meter-high granite summit of the Schanzenberg and opens up a sweeping panorama of the region. While the waterfall and possible ice formation define the Gautschgrotte, the Napoleonschanze is all about the distant views.
Burg Hohnstein: History and Nature
Burg Hohnstein features a viewing tower, a castle garden, a museum and historic cellars. The museum’s exhibitions cover local and regional history, geology, flora and fauna; the specific displays may change. The castle is also the starting point of the Hohnstein Nature Trail. This brings historical exhibition topics and a nature trail together in one place. Access arrangements and trail conditions may change; check the latest information before your visit.
Puppetry and Stage Program
The Hohnstein Kasper Trail commemorates Hohnstein’s puppetry tradition and includes eight Kasper-head stations. The Max Jacob Theater Hohnstein also offers puppet theater, as well as cabaret, theater for adults, concerts, talks and readings. These are two distinct cultural formats: a trail with its stations and a theater program whose individual events change.
The Max Jacob Theater is accessible by bus routes 235, 236, 237 and 254; it is about a ten-minute walk from Hohnstein Eiche. Check the timetable and current performance dates for your visit, as schedules and programs may change.
Hiking Trail and Railway Remains
In the Schwarzbachtal valley, the disused narrow-gauge railway now forms a hiking trail. Preserved bridges, tunnels and track remnants reveal the former railway line along the route, adding a glimpse of its technical past to the walk. The Schwarzbachtal is also associated with the ruins of Burg Schwarzberg, known as the GoĂźdorfer Raubschloss.
The Wider Region: Sächsische Schweiz-Osterzgebirge District
It is worth looking beyond the town to the Sächsische Schweiz-Osterzgebirge district. Saxon Switzerland National Park is Saxony’s only national park and Germany’s only rock national park. The Elbe Cycle Route runs for 40 kilometers through Saxon Switzerland within the district; the Malerweg, by contrast, is exclusively a hiking trail and cannot be explored by bicycle or e-bike. At district level, these represent two different types of route: a cycling route through Saxon Switzerland and a trail reserved for hiking.
If half-timbered houses, a castle, a nature trail and the puppetry tradition are your main interests, you can start looking for accommodation in Hohnstein. When choosing a specific place to stay, check its location and compare it with the places you plan to visit.
