Discover Borgsum: natural beach, ring rampart and island experiences
Accommodation in Borgsum
Borgsum combines a natural beach with a remarkable archaeological site and a range of leisure activities. Lembecksburg, also known as Borgsumburg, gives the village a distinctive historical character; seasonal and sporting activities round out the picture. This makes it possible to discover Borgsum on Föhr in different ways—from its landscape and history to play and island experiences.
The beach and cycle paths as a guide to the area
A natural beach lies just south of Borgsum. The village’s location on the cycling network can also help you choose where to stay: Borgsum is centrally located within Föhr’s cycling network. Föhr has more than 200 kilometres of designated cycle paths and five themed routes. If you would like to explore the island by bike, you can take this information into account when choosing a location.
The landscape around Borgsum is also reflected in the location of Lembecksburg: it stands on a geest hill surrounded by marshland, about one kilometre north of the village. The transition between geest and marshland frames a visit to the ring rampart and sets this destination apart from the attractions right in the village.
Lembecksburg: ring rampart and archaeological traces
Lembecksburg is an archaeological monument and a ring rampart dating from the 9th or 10th century. At almost eight metres high and with an interior diameter of just under 100 metres, its size can be gauged from these precise measurements. Excavations inside uncovered the remains of several well-preserved houses with walls made of turf sods. They date from the 8th to the 11th century. The house remains add traces of earlier dwellings to the picture of the ring rampart.
Another landmark is the Borgsum Mill. It is privately owned, was built in 1992 and is visible from far away. Stopping to admire it is considered worthwhile. Alongside the ring rampart, Borgsum therefore also offers a more recent landmark with a very different architectural history.
You can picnic on the grounds of Lembecksburg. If you are interested in archaeological sites, you can combine your visit with a break. The ring rampart, its setting on the geest hill and the surrounding marshland give the site a different character from leisure attractions featuring play or sports activities.
Leisure activities with something for everyone
The Föhr Corn Maze in Borgsum is open seasonally. Its route winds for about 3.5 kilometres through thousands of corn plants. Adventure Golf offers a different experience: the course has 18 holes with a total length of 350 metres. Short descriptions of local history are displayed at each hole, bringing exercise and play together with brief historical insights.
Adventure Golf also has a viewpoint overlooking Lembecksburg and the corn maze. The grounds include swings, a trampoline, table tennis and table football, as well as slides and a large sand area. The attractions are quite distinct: the corn maze centres on a longer walk through the plants, while Adventure Golf offers a round of golf with a viewpoint and historical texts. The Bi Jaine bowling centre has two bowling lanes.
Food and places to spend time in Borgsum
Borgsum has several restaurants and cafés, as well as farm shops. For a specific sweet treat, visit the Adventure Golf and corn maze grounds, where you can enjoy cakes and tarts from Borgsum’s local bakery. A break there adds to the options for visitors who want to combine their time with the local leisure activities.
When choosing where to stay, you can weigh up the different attractions: the natural beach to the south, the ring rampart and its archaeological traces north of Borgsum, and the leisure activities in the village. If this mix suits your travel plans, you can search for accommodation in Borgsum.
