Accommodation in Gorxheimertal
Gorxheimertal combines the landscape of the southwestern crystalline Odenwald with marked hiking trails and a mountain biking loop. Alongside routes of varying lengths and destinations, a tapestry in the church adds a cultural touch.
Valley, ridges and forest
The municipality stretches across the Grundelbach valley and the ridges to the north and south. Around 46 percent of its 10.46-square-kilometre area is forested. Here, the Vorderer Odenwald is a natural region characterised by crystalline rock; at 461 metres, Daumberg is Gorxheimertal’s highest elevation. The valley, wooded areas and ridges define the landscape and provide clear landmarks for planning excursions.
Hiking: routes and destinations for every preference
A marked network of hiking trails covering just under 36 kilometres runs through Gorxheimertal. Six official routes vary in length and difficulty. Their starting points are generally on the valley floor along the main road. Before setting out, check the local trail markers and current information on starting points, as routes and signage may change.
The G1 Wachenbergweg is a 6.5-kilometre loop starting at the western entrance to Gorxheim. It climbs to the Hessian–Baden border trail and offers a detour to Wachenburg Castle. The 4.8-kilometre G2 Gorxenkopfweg leads to viewpoints overlooking Wachenburg and Windeck Castle. The two trails therefore differ both in length and in their stated destinations: the G1 route description includes a detour to Wachenburg, while the G2 focuses on views of two castles.
Other tours have their own highlights. The 3.9-kilometre G6 Dörrbergweg crosses Dörrberg to the Gängelbach valley and offers a view of Daummühle. The 5.5-kilometre G10 Daumbergweg circles the highest elevation in the Gorxheim Valley. As a longer option, the 8.8-kilometre G9 Waldkopfweg leads to the Löhrbach ridge trail, Teufelsstein and Wingertsberg, offering scenic views. A hiking map covering Gorxheimertal and neighbouring municipalities was produced with the Geo-Naturpark and is available to purchase; check its availability before buying.
Mountain biking
The GO1 is a mountain biking loop around Gorxheimertal. It is about 33 kilometres long and includes around 1,000 metres of elevation gain. The start and finish are at Gemaid-Fitz-Platz by the town hall. For planning your day, the distance and elevation gain provide two specific figures to consider alongside the conditions of the route. Here too, it is advisable to check the trail conditions and signage locally.
A cultural detail in the church
The church houses a tapestry depicting Leonardo da Vinci’s “Last Supper”. The tailor Franz Ende created the work using 96,000 stitches. It is a distinctive cultural detail alongside Gorxheimertal’s trails and landscape.
Following renovations in 2021, the church and community centre have step-free access and an accessible toilet. If these features are important for your visit, check them before travelling. This lets you include cultural interests in your travel plans while looking for accommodation in Gorxheimertal.
