In the Venner Moor, areas where peat has been extracted and which are used for industrial purposes lie directly beside restored areas—a striking contrast in the landscape of the municipality of Ostercappeln. Other places to visit include the Mill Island in Venne, the Schnippenburg Museum and St. Lambertus Church, each offering a different starting point for planning your trip.

Moorland and trails

The seven-kilometre Venner Moor Trail runs from the Beinker inn through the nature reserve. Its length and the transition between areas where peat has been extracted and restored areas give you two clear points of reference for an excursion: the route itself and the distinctive landscape it passes through.

The Kronensee is also part of the municipality’s natural landscape: it covers 400,000 square metres. Together with the Venner Moor, it shows that Ostercappeln offers different landscape themes, without requiring you to focus your plans on just one.

Mill, church and archaeological finds

St. Lambertus Church defines the centre of Ostercappeln and is the town’s landmark. Finds from the exhibition “Schnippenburg Mystery – Amazing Finds from the Celtic Period” can also be seen in the foyer of Ostercappeln Town Hall. This means you can visit a notable building in the town centre and archaeological finds at two different locations.

In Venne, the Venner Mill Village Museum is housed in a watermill built in 1725 on the Venner MĂĽhlenbach stream. Historical milling technology is displayed at its original location; recreational millers explain how grain is ground using millstones. The Mill Island is home to historic buildings from the Venne area: a forge, a bakehouse, a small farm cottage, a bleaching hut and a farmhouse garden. If you are interested in how people lived and worked in the past, you can explore several specific aspects at this same museum site. The grounds around the Darpvenner megalithic stones in the municipality of Ostercappeln have also been redesigned.

The Venner Folk Spring festival takes place every year in May. If you would like to plan your trip around the festival, check the specific event dates for your stay.

Plan guided tours and cycling trips

The Schnippenburg Museum holds a public guided tour year-round on the first Sunday of every month at 2:30 p.m. Check the provider’s latest information before travelling. Also available to book year-round are museum tours, combined Iron Age experiences at the museum, the Schnippenburg excavation site and the Iron Age House, as well as school trips and group excursions. Specific dates and availability may vary for these options.

The local route information also offers different points of reference for cycling: TERRA.trail 4 – DiVa Tour Plus runs through Ostercappeln, Bad Essen and Bohmte. The OC 1 cycle route is 15.63 kilometres long within the municipality and leads, among other places, to the Ludwig Windthorst Memorial in Hitzhausen. When choosing your route, consider whether you would give greater weight to the towns crossed by the DiVa Tour or to the length and destination of the OC 1 in Hitzhausen.

Ostercappeln and the wider OsnabrĂĽck destination

If you would like to include other destinations in the wider OsnabrĂĽck destination as well as Ostercappeln, a visit to Bad Essen-Barkhausen offers a change of theme. At the dinosaur tracks, fossilised footprints can be seen on a steep rock face; the attraction includes two dinosaur replicas, detailed information boards and a circular trail. The signposted Dinosaur Trail near the dinosaur tracks is a 16-kilometre circular hiking route.

The routes, guided tours and excursion destinations mentioned here offer a range of different highlights; check the latest information for any fixed dates.
