Groß Lüsewitz combines the history of its castle with outdoor experiences by the water and along the tree adventure trail. The castle complex, built in the Neo-Renaissance style, dates from 1896 to 1898. The Groß Lüsewitzer See is about 400 metres from the castle. There are also opportunities to learn about the village’s history, and a railway station from which you can explore the surrounding area without a car. You can shape your stay according to your interests in culture, swimming or excursions.

Castle, festival and village history

The castle is a distinctive starting point for exploring the history of the village. Visits to Groß Lüsewitz Castle are only possible as part of the programme on offer. So before your visit, check whether a suitable programme item is available during your travel dates.

If you would like to learn more about local history, there is also an opportunity to meet and exchange ideas: the history group of the Kulturhistorischer Verein Groß Lüsewitz e.V. will once again meet publicly every other month in 2026. Visitors can find out more or discuss the village’s history. Check the dates in advance if you would like to attend a meeting.

The See- und Parkfest held its 26th edition in 2025. It opened with an exhibition at the castle and a concert featuring singing and guitar. The children’s programme that year included face painting, craft stations, a bouncy castle, a giant water slide and pony rides. If you would like to attend a later edition, check its dates and programme rather than assuming the 2025 details will apply.

Another glimpse of the area came during an open day at the Groß Lüsewitz research campus in 2025: from 10 am to 3 pm, greenhouses, laboratories and experimental plots were open to the public. This look back adds insight into local research to the historical and cultural impressions.

Tree adventure trail and time by the lake

You can explore the tree adventure trail on your own. Overview maps and pocket-sized tree descriptions accompany your independent visit. During a public guided tour, marked trees and botanical rarities are explained. You can choose between exploring independently with brief orientation guides and joining a tour focused on the trees and their distinctive features.

The Groß Lüsewitzer See is about 400 metres from the castle. There is a restaurant on the lakeside terrace by the small bathing area, and the bathing water quality is very good. The bathing area is child-friendly and suitable for families.

Cycling can also be a way to explore the surrounding area: rental bicycles are available at the castle’s holiday apartments.

Getting around by train

Groß Lüsewitz railway station provides a rail connection for travellers. Regional trains run hourly towards Wismar via Rostock and in the opposite direction to Tessin. This means you can explore the surrounding area without a car. Check the timetable for your travel date; the stated destinations and hourly service can help you plan your journey and activities.

Sanitz as a separate point of historical interest

Sanitz also offers its own historical points of interest. Sanitz village church was built in the 13th century. This imposing fieldstone building has a half-timbered tower; inside is an altar with paintings by Rudolph Suhrlandt dating from around 1800. Alongside the castle in Groß Lüsewitz, Sanitz therefore offers further examples of different architectural styles and periods.

The Alte Schmiede in Sanitz was first mentioned in official documents in 1798 and is a late-Baroque oak half-timbered building. Its courtyard is a listed monument. It cannot be viewed directly because the building is on private property. Keep this restriction in mind when combining your interest in historic architecture with your travel plans.
