Discover Eich: bathing lake, nature and history
Accommodation in Eich
At the Altrhein bathing lake in Eich, the town shows its waterside character. Swimming is free of charge, at your own risk, and the lake is not supervised by the German Lifeguard Association (DLRG). Check the current swimming and safety rules before your visit.
Enjoy the water and explore on foot
The bathing lake offers around 14,000 square metres of sandy beach and an adjoining sunbathing lawn. Facilities include a playground, a beach volleyball court and a boccia court, as well as changing facilities, toilets and parking. Facilities may change over time.
A six-kilometre circular trail starts at the fire station on OsthofenerstraĂźe in Eich and loops around three Altrhein lakes. Along the way, it passes a bathing beach and a former river course. Ten information stations, observation huts and a viewing tower provide further landmarks along the route. The Altrhein bathing lake itself consists of three sections and was created through gravel and sand extraction.
Nature is also a defining feature: rare orchid, grass and reed species grow in the Eich-Gimbsheim Altrhein; threatened dragonfly and amphibian species find refuge there. The AltrheinErlebnisPfad trail focuses on the 667-hectare Eich-Gimbsheim Altrhein Natura 2000 site. Its reed beds provide a habitat for rare and specialised bird species, as well as other rare or endangered wildlife.
Water sports and cycle routes
Sailing, motorboating and fishing are available at Eicher See. The second slipway is in the western section on the Eich side, at Falkenweg 25. Activities and rules may change; check the current conditions before making plans.
The 1,230-kilometre Rhine Veloroute runs through Worms, Hamm, Eich, Gimbsheim, Mainz and Bingen. There are also cycle routes in the Eich municipal association, with few climbs and considered suitable for families. The character of individual routes may vary. The Eich municipal association’s tourist information centre offers a leisure map showing local cycle routes, as well as information about cycling routes in Rheinhessen.
Local history and museum visits
The Eich Local History Museum presents the town’s history through everyday and craft objects, mammoth bones and other historical finds. In Gimbsheim, the Eich municipal association’s museum is housed in the former Stork Schoolhouse. It has three themed rooms and a room for temporary exhibitions. Exhibits include an Ice Age mammoth skeleton, Roman and Frankish finds, and an early medieval ship mill from the 8th century, discovered in Gimbsheim.
Culture in the wider Alzey-Worms destination
The wider Alzey-Worms destination also offers more cultural attractions. The prehistory and early history exhibition at the Alzey Town Museum traces the cultural and historical development of central Rheinhessen from the Neolithic Age through the Bronze, Iron and Roman ages to the Merovingian period—a span of more than 6,000 years. Another exhibition explores the geology and palaeontology of the Mainz Basin; minerals, especially fossils, illustrate its development over millions of years.
Bathing, the circular trail, cycling and museum visits offer different ways to plan your day. If you are looking for accommodation in Eich, consider which of these experiences you would like to shape your stay.
