Osthofen lies in the wine-growing hills of southern Rheinhessen. Winegrowing has shaped the town for more than 1,300 years; today, more than two million vines grow here. Wine trails, historic buildings and exhibitions offer different ways to explore the landscape and local history. You can shape your stay around outdoor activities, wine or culture—or combine these themes.

Wine and Regional Hospitality

At wineries, informal visits with wine and a light snack are part of the hospitality. Depending on the venue, they take place in the courtyard, barn, cellar or tasting room. Seasonal opening hours and participating wineries may change. The shared tourist information office in Osthofen offers wines and sparkling wines from communities in the Wonnegau collective municipality; the product selection may also change.

Another way to combine wine with an activity is the bookable group outdoor escape tour “In vino veritas.” Groups solve puzzles around Osthofen; a bottle of Wonnegau wine is included. Booking partners, availability and duration may change. Check these details before making plans.

Trails Through Vineyards and Countryside

The Weinbergschneckenweg is 3.5 kilometers long and follows a self-guided walking route through Osthofen’s vineyards. Along the way, you’ll pass vineyard huts and information boards about grape varieties. The trail eventually leads to the hilltop church, set among old trees and historic graves. Check the route details before your trip. Other walking and hiking trails also explore the local wine country and offer wide views of the town and surrounding area.

The RheinTerrassenWeg is a longer route option: it runs for approximately 75 kilometers above the Rhine between Worms and Mainz, with panoramic views and points of interest along the way. The railway running parallel to the route makes it possible to walk shorter sections and return by train. If you plan to use this option, check current services and timetables.

Buildings, Crafts and History

The hilltop church combines its historic setting with a distinctive interior detail: biblical scenes painted by the Seekatz brothers in 1747 can be seen on the organ gallery in the present-day Baroque nave. Furtmühle is Osthofen’s oldest documented mill. Its richly decorated Renaissance portal is dated 1598. These buildings reveal different traces of the town’s history—from religious art to evidence of the milling trade.

At the local history museum, you can see a working forge and a threshing machine from the 1950s. Tools from historic crafts and exhibits on industrialization following the railway connection in 1853 complete the exhibition. Together, these themes offer insights into the ways of working and changes that shaped Osthofen.

The Osthofen Concentration Camp Memorial addresses persecution and resistance in Rhineland-Palatinate from 1933 to 1945 in its permanent exhibition. A reading room supports research into the Nazi era in the region. Special exhibitions, lectures, seminars and cultural events complement the program; information in the outdoor area focuses on the history of the camp.

Getting Your Bearings During Your Stay

Osthofen station is centrally located on the Mainz–Mannheim line. From there, you can reach local attractions on foot or by bicycle. The station is a useful starting point for days spent exploring the town. If you’re traveling by train, it’s worth checking current connections and timetables, as services may change.

Whether you’re focusing on wine trails, architectural history or exhibitions, Osthofen offers a variety of themes to plan your day around. Local trails lead into the wine country, while museums and historic sites offer further perspectives on the town. You can shape your stay around the experiences that interest you most.
