Saulheim combines vineyards and cycling trails with visible traces of local history. At its centre stands the life-size stone statue of Ritter Hundt, while the Mühlbach floodplain offers a chance to experience nature between the two historic town centres. Wine, outdoor activities and culture each provide a different focus—a useful guide when considering what you want your trip to centre on.

Cycling and Hiking Tours

The Saulheim cycling loops start in town and follow paved farm and cycling paths closed to motorised traffic. Climbs and distant views are part of the route, along with rest areas and places to stop for refreshments. This makes it easy to choose a route based on what matters to you for a day on the bike: exercise, views or opportunities to take a break.

The Hiwweltour Saulheimer Hölle offers a different perspective. The route passes through Saulheim’s Hölle and Schlossberg vineyard areas; along the way, panoramic views stretch towards the Donnersberg, Soonwald, Rheingau, Feldberg and Odenwald. Vineyards and far-reaching views shape the hiking experience here, while the cycling loops also offer rest areas and places to stop for refreshments.

Experience Wine

The figures also give an idea of Saulheim’s importance in winegrowing: in 2025, the municipality ranked tenth among Rheinhessen’s major winegrowing communities, with a total vineyard area of 545 hectares. If you would like to discover wine beyond the landscape, Kösterhof winery offers personal wine tastings and vineyard walks. These require prior arrangement.

Mario and Lydia Dechent winery offers wine tastings in its vinotheque and also has a historic vaulted cellar. The two wineries offer different experiences: vineyard walks are part of Kösterhof’s programme, while at Dechent the vinotheque is the main venue for wine tastings.

Local History and Remarkable Buildings

The Lange Stein is the largest menhir in Rheinhessen and a cultural-historical monument. Traces of settlements and burials from the Neolithic, Iron Age and Roman periods have been found around it. In the centre of Saulheim stands the life-size Ritter Hundt, a local landmark since 1987. These two stone figures offer a vivid introduction to the town’s history and its notable historic markers.

In the village centre of Nieder-Saulheim, the Roman statue is surrounded by the historic town hall and two neo-Gothic churches. The town hall is distinguished by its stair tower, spiral staircase and Renaissance roof. Saulheim’s second Protestant church houses a Gothic baptismal font from the 13th century, a Gothic pulpit from the 15th century and a Rococo organ dating from 1728.

The local history museum is housed in a former manor house and displays 19th-century interiors as well as traditional crafts such as cooperage, shoemaking and weaving. Check current access arrangements before visiting. Guided local history tours take visitors through historic Nieder-Saulheim and explore the legacy of mills along the Saulheimer Bach; they are also available in English and French.

Nature in the MĂĽhlbach Floodplain

Between Saulheim’s two historic town centres lies the restored Mühlbach floodplain, a park and riverside landscape with waterways and a diverse range of flora and fauna. It features paved paths, seating and viewpoints, as well as opportunities for wildlife watching and a boules court. The floodplain therefore offers a peaceful contrast to vineyard tours and historic sites.

When choosing accommodation in Saulheim, what you want to focus on may help you decide: would you like to explore local history, spend time in the vineyards, or plan cycling and hiking tours? Guide your search by which of these sides of the town matters most for your trip.
