Moorrege offers plenty of reasons to switch between nature, technology and culture: a former gravel-pit lake provides the setting for Oberglinde Natural Swimming Lake, Düneck Castle stands out for its architecture and park, and a span of a bridge over the Pinnau rotates to let ships pass. There is also a bee museum and St. Michael’s Church. When planning your trip, it is worth bearing in mind the different conditions for visiting each site.

Old trade routes and a movable bridge

Moorrege lies on an old trade and cattle-driving route associated with the transport of goods and the driving of livestock. Another side of the town is shown by the Klevendeich Swing Bridge over the Pinnau. It lies between Neuendeich and Moorrege-Klevendeich and was built in 1887. The bridge is a technical monument; one of its steel truss spans rotates to let ships pass. It is one of Europe’s oldest surviving swing bridges. For anyone interested in technology, this movable structure is a particularly striking detail: the bridge accommodates not only crossings but also ship traffic on the Pinnau.

Bees and beekeeping in Moorrege

The Moorrege Bee Museum focuses on bees, colonies and beekeeping. Its exhibits include a glass observation hive and beekeeping equipment. It is considered the only bee museum in Schleswig-Holstein. Alongside the topics of architecture and waterways, it offers a distinct perspective on beekeeping.

Düneck Castle: villa, park and architecture

The factory owner’s villa “Schloß Düneck” at Klinkerstraße 28 in Moorrege is considered a listed residential building in the style of a villa. Düneck Castle was built in 1871 and is surrounded by a 3.6-hectare park. The park includes wildlife, a tea house, an orangery and a fishpond. The building combines château-style, Victorian and Neo-Grec elements with North German brick architecture: several architectural influences stand side by side here.

The piano nobile includes a gallery hall with a Steinway concert grand piano, a library and a winter garden. Düneck Castle is mostly private, is described as an open house and is occasionally open to the public. Access to the piano nobile depends on the public programme; check current access arrangements before visiting. The castle has hosted events including parties, picnics in the park, music and art events, culinary events, tea gatherings and discussion groups. The programme may change.

St. Michael’s and the town’s history

St. Michael’s is a modern church dating from the 1960s. Inside are a figure of the Archangel Michael and a stained-glass window depicting the twelve gates of Jerusalem. Visits outside regular church services are possible when local staff are available. Check in advance whether a visit is possible. The independent Moorrege-Heist congregation is also part of the town’s history: it was founded in Moorrege in 1954.

Swimming at Oberglinde Natural Swimming Lake

Oberglinde Natural Swimming Lake is a former gravel-pit lake in Moorrege’s Oberglinde district; the bathing lake is surrounded by greenery. The water quality is checked regularly. At a gently sloping bank, children can paddle and learn to swim; there is also a beach volleyball court. Admission is free. Water quality, operating conditions, availability of the beach volleyball court and admission arrangements may change. Check the latest information before visiting.

Bus route 6663 runs between Uetersen-Buttermarkt and Pinneberg station and stops at Moorrege, Oberglinde. From there, it is about a five-minute walk to the natural swimming lake. Routes and stops, as well as directions and signage, may change; check the latest service information and directions. For a day of swimming, water quality and operating conditions are especially important. At Düneck Castle and St. Michael’s, access instead depends on the public programme or the availability of local staff.
