Weigenheim combines winegrowing with striking landmarks that tell the story of the town and its architecture. Local wineries currently cultivate 18 hectares of vineyards; other highlights include the historic mills on the Iff, gardens and half-timbered houses in Reusch, as well as the parish church and Frankenberg Castle.

Winegrowing and architectural history

The first documented mention of Weigenheim dates to 822 AD. A deed recording an exchange of property between Würzburg Bishop Ulcherus and a Count Wicbaldus names the town. Weigenheim Parish Church is a large Neoclassical hall church attributed to the master builder Brockhardt. A listed half-timbered inn with a beer garden adds a different architectural touch. Frankenberg Castle is also in Weigenheim; its impressive appearance makes it a destination for a day out in the district. Thus, the town’s documented history, Neoclassical church architecture, half-timbered buildings and castle grounds offer a range of distinct points of interest.

Kapellberg and the mills on the Iff

The Paradiesstein is located on Kapellberg. A hike along the Weinparadies Trail can begin there—a good starting point if you are interested in going for a walk. There were once 22 mills along the short course of the Iff; 18 still remain, and the Mill Trail passes by them. Near Reusch are the three Taubenlöcher, spring basins of the Iff in a small wood. They once supplied drinking water to nearby Frankenberg Castle. The Mill Trail and Taubenlöcher offer different perspectives on water and its former importance: as a source of drinking water for the castle and in connection with the mills along the Iff.

Gardens and art in Reusch

The Hof-Zellesmühle in Reusch features perennial and flower plantings, a herb garden, a cottage garden, an orchard and a small vineyard. The half-timbered buildings on the mill estate date from the 16th century. A Mediterranean-style water staircase offers views across the entire parkland. The estate also includes an orangery and a plant nursery where you can buy plants for your own garden. Before planning a purchase, check whether sales are currently available. St Mary’s Church in Reusch houses a late Gothic winged altar dating from 1490. Reusch’s attractions thus range from garden spaces and half-timbered buildings to a specific art-historical feature.

Explore the region beyond Weigenheim

The wider Neustadt A.D.Aisch-Bad Windsheim destination offers more cultural and cycling attractions. In Bad Windsheim, a walk through the Franconian Open-Air Museum feels like a journey through 700 years of everyday Franconian history. The Bauhofstadel there was built in 1441–1444; its late medieval roof structure spans an interior of around 360 square metres without supports. Another highlight is the nearly 100-kilometre-long “vom Main zur Zenn” long-distance cycling route, which runs through Neustadt a.d.Aisch-Bad Windsheim district and connects Kitzingen with Fürth.
