Lake Ebnisee between Ebni and Kaisersbach

Lake Ebnisee lies in a valley between Ebni and Kaisersbach. With a water surface of around 6.7 hectares and a depth of up to about five metres, it is a distinctive feature of the landscape. It is fed mainly by the Sommerbach, which flows into the lake on its north shore. Its history goes back a long way: it was first dammed in the winter of 1745/1746 and permanently from 1884 onwards. The wider destination of Kaisersbach links its creation to timber rafting in the Welzheimer Wald. Tourism around the lake began modestly and developed over the following decades into a destination for local recreation.

At Lake Ebnisee, you can swim, go rowing or pedal boating, stroll along the shore and relax on the sunbathing lawns. You can also barbecue at designated barbecue areas. This gives you several ways to spend the day: getting out on the water, taking a break by the shore or going for a walk. In summer, pedal boats and rowing boats are available; outside the swimming season, the landscape is ideal for a longer walk around the lake and through the surrounding forest. This contrast can help with planning: would you like the lake itself to shape your day, or would you rather focus on longer routes and the surrounding area?

Lakeside paths and a natural monument

The path around Lake Ebnisee is about 1.7 kilometres long and almost flat. There is just one slight incline; the path on the eastern side is paved. It is easy to navigate with a pushchair or wheelchair. The route offers a manageable way to experience the lakeshore on foot, while a longer hike through the surrounding forest calls for a different amount of time. Which option suits you depends on whether you want to include a short circuit or a longer stretch in your day’s plans.

The Gallengrotte natural monument is also near Lake Ebnisee. A picturesque, unspoilt path leads there from the lake’s northern shore. This route combines a visit to the water with a nearby destination; be sure to take the current path conditions into account.

Events and traces of history

“Ebnisee für Alle” is an inclusive event held around the lake. It has taken place over three days between May and August each year since 2008. Activities are free of charge; dates and programmes vary from year to year. If you would like to include the event in your travel plans, check the specific dates for your chosen year.

The hike “From Lake Ebnisee to the World Heritage Site of the Limes” also explores the region’s history. Following the traces of the Roman frontier, it partly follows the old boundary rampart and passes the remains of watchtowers and a former small fort. Information boards along the route offer insights into Roman life on the border with Germania. The trail combines exercise with historical sites rather than limiting the past to a single location.

The name of the district of Ebni has another link to history: it is probably connected with medieval glassmaking. It may derive from the flattening of glass that had first been blown into a hollow shape. This tentative interpretation points to a craft practised in the past and adds another chapter to the region’s history alongside its Roman traces.

Kaisersbach as a wider area to explore

Beyond Ebni, the wider destination of Kaisersbach offers more landscapes and cultural attractions. The Hägelesklinge and Brunnenklinge ravines lie between the districts of Ebersberg and Täle; both have been protected nature reserves since 1969. The Menzlesmühle, a watermill dating from the 14th century, is also part of Kaisersbach and has an overshot waterwheel. Families can also visit Schwaben Park, an amusement park in Kaisersbach with more than 60 attractions.

For practical information, the wider destination of Kaisersbach has around 300 paid parking spaces at Lake Ebnisee. Accessible toilets are available at the kiosk by the car park and at the Waldschenke am Ebnisee; it is best to check the information when you arrive. When choosing accommodation in Ebni, you can focus on the experiences that matter to you: walking along the shore, going boating in summer, planning a hike, or adding cultural and nature attractions in Kaisersbach. This makes it easier to find the right focus for your trip without trying to fit every activity into the same kind of day.
