Hofgeismar: Gesundbrunnen, Museums and Trails
Accommodation in Hofgeismar
The architectural history of the Gesundbrunnen, the town museum and the pharmacy museum housed in the historic Steinerne Haus, as well as trails that pass through Hofgeismar: the town offers a range of ways to combine culture with time outdoors on a trip. Hofgeismar is located right in Reinhardswald Nature Park. Which accommodation is right for your stay also depends on whether you want to focus on historic sites or on walks and cycling tours.
The Gesundbrunnen: architecture and a walk
The fountain temple at the Gesundbrunnen was built in 1790/92 to designs by Simon Louis du Ry, on the site of two older buildings. It rests on eight Ionic columns and encloses the mineral spring. Here, architecture and the spring are directly connected. Today, the former bathing facilities at the Gesundbrunnen are a pleasant place for a weekend walk. If you would like to combine the two, you can take the temple as an architectural focal point and extend your walk through the former bathing complex.
Museums and a house dating from 1239
The Hofgeismar Town Museum was founded in 1938 as the Municipal Local History Collections and is the oldest museum in Kassel district. The Pharmacy Museum is housed in the historic Steinerne Haus, one of the region’s oldest surviving buildings, dating from 1239. Together, they offer two different ways to explore Hofgeismar’s history: the Town Museum’s collections and a museum housed in a remarkable historic building.
After reconstruction and renovation, the Pharmacy Museum was operated as a private museum for 30 years. Its facilities and activities at the time included pharmacy furnishings, medicine production, a specialist study library and a herb garden. This former phase as a museum gives the site its own historical focus. Together with the Town Museum, it offers a reason to consider culture and architectural history as part of your travel plans.
Hiking and trails through Hofgeismar
Several trails pass through Hofgeismar and its districts: the Diemeltaler Schmetterlings-Steig, the Weserbergland Trail, a certified quality hiking trail, and the European Huguenot and Waldensian Trail. They offer different kinds of experiences, from hiking trails to cultural routes. To plan your trip, first decide whether you are mainly looking for a hike or a route with a cultural and historical focus. These named routes provide specific options, although they are not all the same kind of tour.
There are also two distinct options for cycling. The Brunnenkirche is on the Hessian Long-Distance Cycle Route R4 and has carried the EKD’s seal of recognition as a cycle route church since 2024. If you are using this seal to plan a specific trip, check its current status. The specially marked Märchenland cycle loop starts in Hofgeismar; it can be used to cycle through the entire nature park. This gives you a choice between a cycle route that passes the Brunnenkirche and a circular route that starts in Hofgeismar.
Choose accommodation based on your travel interests
When choosing accommodation, you can start by considering which themes you want your stay to focus on. If museums and architectural history matter to you, the Steinerne Haus, the Town Museum and the Gesundbrunnen are specific points of interest to consider when planning. For a trip focused more on outdoor activities, consider the trails that pass through Hofgeismar and the Märchenland cycle loop that starts in town. If you want to cycle through the nature park, you can also bear in mind that Hofgeismar is listed as the starting point for this loop.
