Wolfhagen brings together prominent landmarks, fairy-tale motifs and trails through the town and its surroundings. St. Anne’s Church is the town’s landmark and rises high above the built-up areas, visible from afar. At the Fairy Tale Fountain, a wolf and kid goats symbolise the Wolfhagen town fairy tale and its close connection with the Brothers Grimm. Together, they give Wolfhagen a distinctive cultural identity: a striking town landmark and a fairy-tale story stand side by side.

Town History and Hans Staden

The Wolfhager Land Regional Museum is located on the site of the former medieval Wolfhagen Castle. It has a permanent exhibition about the writer and adventurer Hans Staden. The exhibition offers insights into the lives of the Indigenous people of South America before colonisation. Check the exhibition details before your trip.

The Hans Staden Trail also explores this subject: it has seven stops, starts in Wolfhagen and ends at the Wolfhager Regional Museum. Starting in town, visiting the stops and finishing at the museum give the route its own distinct course. This makes it different from a visit focused solely on the exhibition.

Half-Timbered Town, Hiking Trails and Birdwatching

Weekly town tours take you through the half-timbered town, past restored houses, narrow lanes and squares. They introduce the history of Wolfhagen and its residents. The tours are offered seasonally; check the schedule before your trip.

Those who prefer to explore independently can choose from trails with different themes. The Wolfsfährte hiking trail connects Wolfhagen’s town centre with all its districts and leads to viewpoints and natural sites. The approximately 8 km-long Eco Path Wolfhagen Cultural History takes you on a journey through history in the surrounding area. The Wolfsfährte connects the town centre with the districts, while the Eco Path focuses on cultural history.

For cycling, the 14.6 km W3 “Wind, Clouds, Wide Views” circular cycling route starts in Wolfhagen and leads to the Glockenborn nature reserve, where visitors can observe its diverse birdlife. Compared with the Eco Path, the two routes differ both in their mode of travel and their theme: one focuses on a circular cycling route and birdwatching, the other on a historical hiking trail.

Further Nature and Cultural Themes in the Higher-Level Kassel Destination

The higher-level Kassel destination also offers a variety of landscapes. Large beech forests and numerous volcanic basalt hills characterise the landscape in Habichtswald Nature Park. Reinhardswald Nature Park brings together centuries-old pollarded oaks, beech and spruce forests, river valleys and natural stream landscapes. It also features limestone grasslands with juniper and orchids. In Frau-Holle-Land Geo-Nature Park, deep forests alternate with meadows and fields; there are also colourful mountain meadows and trout streams.

For independent exploration, Kassel district has 15 audio tours in the “Hör‘ mal!” programme. They follow fixed routes with stops and viewpoints. The Eco Paths in Kassel district have no opening hours and can be explored independently at any time of day; conditions may vary from one trail to another. The German Fairy Tale Route passes through Kassel district and leads, among other places, to Sababurg, the Sleeping Beauty Castle, and Trendelburg Castle with its Rapunzel Tower. These examples add further distinct themes to the higher-level destination, complementing Wolfhagen’s focus on fairy tales and history.
