Stuer offers different ways to explore its themes: animal welfare, nature and village history. BÄRENWALD Müritz is an animal welfare project, the Valley of the Kingfishers is known for its ruined mill and archaeological traces, and St. Peter’s Church for its Late Gothic art and evidence of family history. This gives you the choice of which themes you would like to shape your stay.

Bears, Mills and Nature

BÄRENWALD Müritz is an animal welfare project run by FOUR PAWS. Rescued bears can rediscover and express their natural behaviours in naturalistic enclosures. The project gives your trip a particular focus: it is about both the rescued animals and how they can live in a naturalistic environment.

The Valley of the Kingfishers can be reached by bicycle or on foot. There you will find the ruins of a watermill built from fieldstones, known as the middle mill. Beyond the middle mill, after crossing the stream, a narrow path leads to a dolmen with a long barrow right beside the B 198. Anyone interested in archaeological traces will find another specific point of interest here, in addition to the mill ruins. If you plan to take the path, it is worth checking the current trail conditions.

St. Peter’s Church and Village History

St. Peter’s Church in Stuer contains a Late Gothic winged altarpiece dating from around 1490. Made of oak, it is notable for its elaborate carvings. The church interior also features 65 coats of arms, created between 1680 and 1930, which represent part of the family history of the von Flotow family. The altar and the coats of arms offer different points of interest: the carving of the Late Gothic altar on the one hand, and evidence of family history spanning a long period on the other.

Regular services are held at St. Peter’s Church, and it is open to visitors during the summer months. To the east of the church, on a pasture, stands a tree-covered motte with remnants of masonry. It is considered the village’s oldest fortification. The church and the motte offer different perspectives on Stuer: religious life and historical architectural and archaeological traces.

Plan Your Stay Around Your Interests

When looking for accommodation for your trip to Stuer, you can start by deciding what you would most like to focus on. Are you mainly interested in animal welfare, a walk or cycle ride, or village history? This question can also help when planning a trip with family or a group with different interests: these themes offer different ways to enjoy the area, without everyone having to choose the same one.

Mecklenburg Lake District: Further Perspectives on Nature

The Müritz National Park in the Mecklenburg Lake District is characterised by forests, bogs, lakes and expansive meadows. The Müritz National Park Hiking Trail covers the park’s landscape types and special features in nine stages: it runs along lakes, through ancient forests, past inland dunes and to the source of the Havel. Certified nature and landscape guides offer informative tours through the national park, including guided walks in the UNESCO World Heritage beech forest of Serrahn and tours from the water.

The Damerower Werder bison reserve offers a different perspective on nature. It is located on a peninsula in Lake Kölpin and in the Nossentiner/Schwinzer Heath Nature Park. Visitors can observe bison there. The forest adventure trail features climbing opportunities, an ant house, an exhibition with tactile and visual displays, and a dendrophone. Together, these offer different ways to experience the Mecklenburg Lake District: through stages and guided tours, or through wildlife watching and an adventure trail.
