Neunkirchen combines traces of mining and ironworks with historic townscapes, museums and trails through the countryside. This lets you discover different sides of the destination, from the history of technology and traditional crafts to hiking and cycling trails. When planning your trip, it is worth first considering which experiences you want to shape your stay—and which accommodation suits those plans.

Experience Industrial Heritage Up Close

The Neunkirchen Ironworks Trail takes you through the historic Old Ironworks Site, past blast furnaces and hot-blast stoves. The technology tour along the Neunkirchen Ironworks Trail introduces the work processes at the Neunkirchen Ironworks and includes climbing a blast furnace more than 23 metres high. If you plan to join this tour, check the current visitor arrangements in advance.

Mining history is also at the heart of Schiffweiler: its three mining trails explore the municipality’s industrial heritage and show the impact of mining on people and landscapes. GONDWANA – The Praehistorium explores a different subject. It presents the history of the planet and of life using modern animation and audiovisual technology. The destination therefore offers a choice of both industrial history and insights into the history of the Earth and life.

At the Reden Experience Site, industrial heritage meets outdoor activity. The 90-metre-high spoil heap offers views across the region and is a great place to go hiking. A four-kilometre leisure and skating trail also runs around it. Saarengeti also offers outdoor trails: in addition to a circular route of around five kilometres, there are varied hiking and cycling trails. The route lengths provide a practical guide when planning your outings around the kind of activity you prefer.

Old Town, Museums and Crafts

Ottweiler’s old town is shaped by its medieval heritage, with impressive Renaissance and Baroque buildings forming part of its townscape. Its museums also cover a range of historical themes. The Bakery Museum displays more than 30 machines and around 1,000 exhibits from different eras of traditional baking across two floors. At the Saarland School Museum, faithfully recreated classrooms bring the school day of past centuries to life. These include a classroom from the period between 1910 and 1950 and a 19th-century teaching room.

Another way to experience history is on the Ostertalbahn tourist museum train. This scenic 21-kilometre route connects Ottweiler’s historic old town with Schwarzerden. Its restored locomotives and carriages offer a glimpse into railway history from the 1950s and 1960s. In the Kasbruch Valley, the historic trail passes through the Kasbruch Nature Reserve and by Neunkirchen’s oldest Celtic settlement traces, a sacrificial stone and the Roman Steps. Town history, school and craft traditions, and archaeological traces offer different points of interest for days devoted to culture.

Trails, Views and Hands-On Activities

Steinbach lies in the Ostertal Valley on the edge of Saar-Hunsrück Nature Park in the Neunkirchen district and can be reached by numerous hiking trails through the surrounding countryside. The Betzelhübel panoramic tower, built in 2013, offers far-reaching views across much of Saarland, neighbouring Rhineland-Palatinate and Ottweiler’s historic old town. If you enjoy spending time outdoors, these places offer a different experience from exhibitions and historic townscapes.

At Finkenrech Leisure Centre, themed gardens invite you to enjoy a leisurely stroll and other outdoor activities. Individually bookable group activities for children and adults combine learning, fun and nature. The events programme adds music picnics, the “Spring and Autumn at Finkenrech” festivals, and workshops. For a trip where discovering things together and taking part in a specific activity matter, this offers an alternative to a museum visit or a hike.

Traditional crafts can also be experienced hands-on: at the Steinbach Local History Museum, you can make butter the traditional way; this activity is available by arrangement. The options range from historic collections and technology to trails through the countryside and hands-on activities.
