Neunkirchen between Industrial Heritage and Nature
Accommodation in Neunkirchen
Industrial heritage, contemporary art and nature trails come together in Neunkirchen. The range extends from a zoo in the woods near the town centre to a historic ironworks site and trails through the Kasbruch Valley. This lets you choose different ways to explore without limiting yourself to just one kind of experience.
Zoo and Forest Trails
Neunkirchen Zoo is home to almost 600 animals from more than 120 species across 21 hectares. Its location in a wooded area near the town centre combines a wildlife experience with a green setting. The zoo can be reached from the town centre or Neunkirchen Saar main station by bus routes 312 and 302. Timetable details may change, so it is worth checking the current schedule before your visit.
For a short walk, the Neunkircher HĂĽttenweg offers a quick, approximately two-kilometre, accessible and family-friendly loop through the historic Alte HĂĽttenareal. The Vogellehrpfad (Bird Trail) takes a different approach: this easy walk leads through mixed woodland all year round, with information boards sharing facts about native birds and trees. The Zooweg (Zoo Trail) also passes through mixed woodland, but has its own highlights, including rock formations, a biotope, a bird protection grove, historic monuments and a pond area.
Kasbruch Valley and Longer Routes
The historic educational trail in the Kasbruch Valley passes through the nature reserve and branches off to Gallo-Roman archaeological sites. Attractions along the route include a Roman quarry, the Opferstein quarry, Jungfernstiege/Jungferntrapp and rock-cut tombs. The combination of natural surroundings and archaeological traces gives this trail a different character from walks through mixed woodland.
At around 50 kilometres, the Neunkirchen Circular Hiking Trail is a much longer option for an extended hike. It runs through valleys and along streams in the hilly landscape around Neunkirchen. For cyclists, the Neunkirchen City Loop follows the Blies and continues through the Kasbruch Valley. The Bliesterrassen also bring the river into focus and add to the experience for visitors to the town.
Industrial Heritage and Art
The Alte HüttenAreal brings Neunkirchen’s industrial heritage and history to life through a variety of places and activities. These include the Hüttenweg, a listed water tower, the Stummsche Reithalle and the Neue Gebläsehalle. The Neue Gebläsehalle hosts concerts and musical productions. Guided tours of the Hüttenweg are available in classic, technical and culinary formats, as well as with audio and as a costumed tour. This offers a range of ways to explore the ironworks and industrial history.
The Städtische Galerie Neunkirchen offers a contemporary contrast. It presents four to six changing exhibitions of contemporary art each year. The zoo, trails, industrial history and gallery offer different ways to shape a stay in Neunkirchen, depending on your interests—with a focus on nature, activity, history or art.
Other Places in the Wider Neunkirchen Destination
Other places are also part of the wider Neunkirchen destination. In Ottweiler, the Bakery Museum displays more than 30 machines and around 1,000 exhibits from different periods of traditional baking across two floors. The Saarland School Museum depicts everyday school life in past centuries in faithfully recreated classrooms. Exhibits include a classroom from 1910 to 1950 and a 19th-century teaching room. Ottweiler’s old town has a medieval character and features buildings from the Renaissance and Baroque periods.
In Schiffweiler, three mining trails explore the municipality’s industrial heritage and show the effects of mining on people and landscapes. GONDWANA – Das Praehistorium presents the history of the planet and life using modern animation and audiovisual technology. At the Reden visitor destination, the 90-metre-high mine spoil heap offers views across the region and is a popular place for hiking; a four-kilometre recreational and skating trail runs around it. These regional destinations broaden the choice, while the trails, zoo and cultural attractions in Neunkirchen itself shape a stay in the town.
