Discover Schiffweiler
Accommodation in Schiffweiler
Schiffweiler combines a cultural landscape shaped by coal mining with trails that bring together knowledge of nature and industrial history. The nature trail on Strietberg, the Itzenplitz recreation area and the historic attractions at the Reden Experience Site offer different starting points for your explorations. The routes also differ in length: the educational trail on Strietberg is 2.3 kilometres long; the four Nordic walking routes range from 5.5 to 11 kilometres.
Experience nature and compare routes
The nature trail on Strietberg starts and ends at the lower end of BauernstraĂźe. Around 30 stations on the environment and nature, along with information boards, line the educational route. Seating and a paved surface are also part of the trail, which is suitable for year-round use. At 2.3 kilometres, it offers a clear comparison with the longer Nordic walking routes in the Itzenplitz recreation area.
Itzenplitz is a 667-hectare cultural landscape created and shaped by coal mining. At the heart of the recreation area are the Itzenplitzer Weiher and its historic pump house. The pump house is considered a remarkable feature of Saarland’s architectural heritage. In addition to hiking and Nordic walking, cycling, horse riding and fishing are also possible activities here. The four Nordic walking routes range from 5.5 to 11 kilometres—useful to know when factoring the planned distance into your travel plans.
Discover mining history along the trails
The Itzenplitzer Pingen Trail is the longest of the three Reden mining trails. It passes historic mining sinkholes: these funnel-shaped depressions bear witness to early mining. QR codes along the trail provide historical background, photographs and mining anecdotes. The accompanying audio is available in Standard German or the Saarland dialect. In this way, the trail links visible traces in the landscape with further historical insights.
The former Marcel-Bertrand shafts are also located within Schiffweiler. Remains that have been preserved include a retaining wall and a spoil heap. These remnants add another specific link to the municipality’s mining past alongside its trails and historic attractions.
Exhibitions and digital tours at the Reden Experience Site
The colliery building at the Reden Experience Site houses exhibitions by the State Office for Monument Preservation on the history of settlement in Saarland. Check the current exhibition programme before your trip. A digital tour offers audio insights into the site’s past and historical significance at ten selected locations via QR code. It runs from the Große Werkstatt through the former mining site to GONDWANA – Das Praehistorium; you can start at any station. As digital visitor services may be updated, it is worth checking the latest tour information before your visit.
The Reden Experience Site also has a four-kilometre leisure and skating path. Check the trail conditions before using it. The Redener Tafelberg can be climbed by e-bike or mountain bike. This means the Experience Site offers everything from historical insights to activities on two wheels.
