Ottweiler combines a compact medieval Old Town with historic museums and hiking trails that each have a distinct character. You can fill your trip with local history and exhibitions or plan to spend more time outdoors.

Old Town and history across several eras

The historic Old Town features a medieval urban layout with Renaissance and Baroque buildings. Sections of the 15th-century ring fortification have been preserved. A former keep now serves as a bell and viewing tower—a striking example of how a historic building can be given a new purpose.

The town museum’s permanent exhibition on the era of the Counts of Nassau-Saarbrücken-Ottweiler also includes the Charter of Liberties of 1550. Another exhibition on Neumünster Monastery brings together models of the monastery, stone relics, documents and seals, as well as archaeological finds from the 13th century. Different objects bring the histories of the rulers and the monastery into focus.

The Saarland School Museum features an original classroom from 1910 to 1950 and a 19th-century teaching room. Its historical school topics include reading, writing, girls’ education, teachers’ lives and technical media. Visitors interested in everyday life and the history of education will find a different perspective here than in the exhibitions on the town and the monastery.

Hiking between viewpoints and rivers

The Schauinslandweg is a ten-kilometre circular trail from SchafbrĂĽcker MĂĽhle to BetzelhĂĽbel. Along the way are numerous viewpoints, two ponds and the Kerbschlucht ravine. Sturdy footwear and sure-footedness are essential on the natural paths and through the ravine, so bear this in mind when choosing the route.

BetzelhĂĽbel Panoramic Tower offers far-reaching views across much of Saarland and into neighbouring Rhineland-Palatinate. Opening arrangements can change, so it is advisable to check them before your visit. The MĂĽhlenpfad offers a different kind of hiking route: it starts at the Historic Wern Oil Mill, follows river courses and is more than seven kilometres long. The trails therefore differ in both length and features: the Schauinslandweg is explicitly a circular trail, while river courses shape the route of the MĂĽhlenpfad.

Oil mill, forest sensory trail and regional cuisine

The Historic Wern Oil Mill is a restored museum example of an oil mill that uses a stamping press. Its machinery from the early 20th century is fully preserved. The mill sells its oil and resulting by-products through the mill shop—an insight into the production process that connects the exhibition’s technology with its products.

The forest sensory trail starts at the Historic Wern Oil Mill and offers plenty of experiences, particularly for children. This makes it a different kind of outing from the longer hiking trails. The neighbouring Werns MĂĽhle hotel-restaurant serves culinary specialities and gourmet experiences made with regional products. The mill visit, trail and regional cuisine therefore appeal to different interests; you can choose accommodation based on whether culture, hiking or food is your priority.

Ostertal Railway and more to explore in the Neunkirchen destination

The historic Ostertal Railway provides access from various stations to hikes and cycling tours in the surrounding region. Tourist train services operate according to the timetable. In the wider Neunkirchen destination, a tourist museum train connects Ottweiler’s historic Old Town with Schwarzerden along a 21-kilometre route. Restored locomotives and carriages bring the railway history of the 1950s and 1960s to life.

The guided tour of the Neunkircher Hüttenweg is also part of the wider Neunkirchen destination. It presents the work processes at the Neunkirchen ironworks and includes climbing a blast furnace more than 23 metres high. This industrial heritage theme complements the museum and hiking experiences without being equated with Ottweiler’s town and nature attractions.
